In 2025, @Starlink has significantly expanded its network in Africa, activating service in 21 African markets to date.  A recent Ookla report (ookla.com/articles/starl…) highlighted the expanded service and how Starlink often is the best solution for consumers, outperforming others particularly in speeds and uptime.  However, the report highlighted how Starlink latencies are falling short of terrestrial options.    We are investing heavily in our African network to improve quality of service across the content.  @Starlink is now operating 3 point of presences (PoPs) in the content, and we expect to double this number by early 2026.  These PoPs and associated gateway sites allow us to terminate traffic for African consumers in Africa (rather than backhauling the traffic over lasers to Europe or other regions), which provides the best quality of service, as long as content is also sourced within Africa.  We expect quality of service to improve dramatically as we expand our network, and challenge our content partners to join us in investing in Africa.   Starlink transparently publishes its network metrics on its website (at starlink.com/map?view=laten…).  Below are the median download speeds and median latencies on the Starlink network in Africa (measured during times of peak traffic over the past 7 days) as well as a comparison to the United States. There is a lot of work to do – expect major improvements over the coming months.
