I want to apologize to an old colleague of mine. He’d just gotten married and took a 10 day honeymoon (wow!). A month later he did a weekend ski trip (oof!) and couldn’t get WiFi for a closing that got moved up 4 weeks. I filled in for him. I remember the partner saying he was a total ‘liability’ & that he sucked. I laughed and said “yeah - doesn’t want it.” I believed it too. I spent the whole weekend playing ‘hero’ for Deal Team Six. You can ALWAYS count on me. Meanwhile my relationship was on borrowed time and hair thinning rapidly. I’m V10 baby! He got ‘stealth’ dismissed that Monday. They let him keep his website photo for 2 months while he found something new. He did. Fast forward a few years - I see it way different. He was bright, and hard working, and put his ppl first. He liked his life. He had balls. But I was racin’! - king of the rats. And my apartment in midtown actually had vermin. A totally delusional period of my life. One of those lessons you learn in hindsight. Hope you’re doing well brother.

I’m working on entering my time today, so I’m gonna talk about money even tho it’s kinda tacky. There is lots of discourse surrounding BigLaw associate salaries, and the importance of going to top law schools if new lawyers want to earn those salaries. But new lawyers in tiny law can also earn those salaries in the right practices. Ch 11 is one of those areas. This is a fee order for me for 6 months of work in 1 case. I have minimal overhead because I don’t trust anybody to do my work.😆 I usually have 4-5 active ch 11 cases at the same time, plus the occasional small ch 7 and 13s, or general business/ transactional clients. I don’t charge anywhere near BigLaw rates, I underbill because entering time bores me, I’m not in an expensive coastal city, I’ve been licensed less than 4 yrs, and I did not go to a top ranked law school (I had limited options geographically because of my job and family). I do work hard, and I’m good at what I do. If you’re a new lawyer who is willing to work hard but BigLaw is not for you, consider ch 11 debtor work. Good lawyers are needed!

Law firms are putting AI in the wrong place. Sullivan & Cromwell, Latham, Allen & Overy - every major firm is racing AI into legal research, drafting, and memos. That's exactly where hallucinations become malpractice. A single fabricated case citation has already sanctioned real lawyers (Mata v. Avianca, 2023 - the ChatGPT lawyers). Note to Dads who have activities with their kids today. One day, sooner than you think, those days will be over. I would give anything, ANYTHING, to get those days back again. When they strike out w bases loaded: it's a gift. When they spill their milkshake in the back seat: it's a gift. Mess up the windows with their muddy hands: a gift. Complain about how long the drive is taking: gift. I don't have many regrets in life, but one of them (a BIG one) is not being present enough when I should have been and not having the right perspective at times. So today, watch the game, enjoy the game, and recognize there are a bunch of people out there like me who would pay anything to be in that seat again. Those are the moments that matter in your life, and they're fleeting. The moments that don't matter... Sending another email. Having another client call. Having another meeting. Be an amazing dad to your kids. There's no more important job on the planet.
