@RyanSoccerAA It was just such a ‘stupid dive’ as well. Area of the pitch/over theatrical/no massive advantage.
In most partsI the tournament has been ref’d ok bar the odd game. The quicker throw in’s / swift checking of corner decisions have helped the flow of the game without a doubt.

This is just the wrong take - this is the reason it SHOULD be reviewable. If the player is taking a big enough dive that it prompts the referee to give a yellow and the referee sees a clear simulation, it's gotta be a yellow. This wasn't just going to ground.

@exfootballfan I don’t think it’s an uncomfortable convo. The guy is 39, understandable he’s declined - incredible that he’s managed to get to the top of the goal scoring charts imo. Can still produce in small bursts but I hope this is his last major tournament - should bow out on top.

I think this is the biggest issue. There was not even a yellow on the pitch. You cannot determine "excessive force or brutality" from a slow motion replay.

Because referee Raphael Claus did not even issue a yellow card on the field—treating the contact as an accidental, routine collision—the threshold for VAR to step in was incredibly high. FOX rules analyst Mark Clattenburg and many other pundits argued that because Balogun's challenge lacked force, intensity, or malicious intent (it was a "step-and-action" accident as he was falling), it was not a clear and obvious error for the referee to miss a red card. By letting the play go, VAR broke protocol by re-refereeing a highly subjective, accidental play.

As much as it wasn't a red. Terrible decisions, including reds, are partnof the game. Who gets to say which decisions are reversed and why?
If FIFA have a trigger for exemptions, it has to be used in an extreme scenario. This and the Ronaldo exemption are too open to abuse.

🚨 Folarin Balogun is eligible to play against Belgium. FIFA sources had insisted US Soccer had no appeal. Sources say US Soccer did not attempt one as a result. And Balogun had spoken on Monday here in Seattle about missing the game telling us, “I have to accept it…” Yet FIFA have decided to hand Balogun a suspended one-game ban, which is in their powers as per Article 27. The red card stands but Balogun is free to play. Cristiano Ronaldo also given a suspended ban before the tournament allowing him to play Portugal’s opening World Cup games.
