Abbott threatened to pull $530,000 in state funding unless the city canceled a private Muslim community event. The city had no choice. A joyful Eid celebration, now in its third year, was canceled because of government coercion. Faith communities rent city-owned facilities for private events across Texas every day. No governor has threatened funding over any of them. The difference here is not the structure of the event. It is who is gathering. The harm is done, but it can be undone.
