I now live not terribly far from these three communities: Wenksville, Bendersville and Aspers in Adams County, PA. Apparently Wenksville was originally named Wanksville in 1844. Not too far are Gargol, Uriah, Mummasburg, Arentsville, Idaville and, of course, East Berlin.

I will add that Upper Adams County, Pennsylvania is stunningly gorgeous, with South Mountain (the northernmost point on the Blue Ridge) curling around, and lots of orchards and beautiful barns.

When I heard about Senator Graham’s death last night, the first thing I thought about was not all the things he said and did in service of Donald Trump. I thought of the time before Donald Trump when he was a brother to Senator John McCain. A time when senators from different parties could fight about politics and still be friends. A time when a conservative Republican from South Carolina could say of my father: “If you can’t admire Joe Biden as a person, you’ve got a problem. He’s the nicest person I’ve ever met in politics. As good a man as God ever created.” That is the Senator Graham I will remember today. Not because I have forgotten what came after. Because in that memory there is hope. Hope for a country where brothers can fight like hell over policy and still share a meal, and a laugh, and the loss of the people they love. I will choose to remember the time before Trump. Because I believe in an America after Trump.

I don't think it's possible, in 2026, to be more clammishly incorrect about a person's decision to dedicate themselves to public service. Lindsey Graham had his limitations and knew them - he was never going to president, he knew even when he ran. He worked wholeheartedly with the Trump administration - with joi de vivre, with a sense of sly Southern humor and perspective - for the same reason he got into politics in the first place (and which few do anymore): He believed in basic principles worth fighting for - most clearly, the American alliance structure, but beyond that simple human decency - and he was probably right that nobody could have done a better job of embodying them. You've been wrong plenty of times before, but rarely more so. I remember when you almost used to be a man. He was one.

Thinking about how absolutely vile many of you have been to Lindsey Graham during his life—and will continue to be in his death. Few realize he became an orphan and raised his young sister while he was in college—the first of his family to earn higher education. He was a good, brilliant, self-deprecating man with consistent principles who leaves a legacy of tirelessly working for the people of South Carolina. Praying for Darline—the sister he raised—and all who loved him.

Lindsey Graham and I had a complicated relationship. Before Trump, we were friends. We traveled together on congressional trips around the world, including visiting Syrian refugee camps where we met children whose lives had been shattered by war. Those moments reminded us why public service mattered. After Trump, we went in very different directions, and we eventually stopped speaking. I never hid those disagreements, and I won’t rewrite that history today. But death has a way of putting things in perspective. I choose to remember the man I knew before our paths diverged—the one who cared deeply about America’s role in the world and wasn’t afraid to see suffering up close. Rest in peace, Lindsey. My prayers are with his family and all who loved him.
