These two photos were taken 91 seconds apart. That's what happens when a tornado is moving toward you at HIGHWAY SPEEDS. This was the Villisca, Iowa tornado of May 21, 2024; it preceded the infamous Greenfield tornado. Its forward speed averaged 50 mph, covering 32 miles in 38 minutes. I was positioned near the intersection of Highways 34 and 71. The tornado was moving northeast. It was barely a distant bowl-shaped lowering at first; within 3 minutes, its outer circulation would sideswipe me as I raced east, stuck behind a slower-moving chaser. Winds of 90+ mph buffeted my vehicle, even though the core funnel itself contained 140-150 mph. I had about 15-25 seconds to spare. Sometimes it's easy to underestimate how quickly a tornado – especially if it's moving directly at you.

@tornadartz @KennethLerose Thank you! I genuinely hope you get an amazing easily naked eye visible comet on your birthday though! That would be freaking amazing!

@tornadartz @KennethLerose That’s at 300mm though so in reality it was really small. But Moab area had so many great and often easy line ups to choose from!

The amount of energy in hurricanes is astronomical. When you crunch the numbers, it shows just how asinine it sounds that humans could manipulate them, never mind create them from scratch.

Comet PANSTARRS could become a very nice camera and naked eye object in the morning sky in about 4 weeks, especially if forward scattering verifies!

@MatthewCappucci When we had the easterly mountain wave event here in wa it was so sporadic you’d see damage a few yards or multiple football fields long paths of complete Forrest destruction. Nature is just so darn wild!

Reading some Fujita papers from the 80s and it's sometime mind-boggling how tiny microbursts can be.. sometimes on the order of a football field.
