When I was a teenager, I had a friend whose parents did this to him after college freshman year. Communication and all financial aid were cut off, saying that "it was for his own good." 2 years later, the most hardworking and brilliant person I knew, is working as a delivery guy just to make ends meet. He lived in a crappy basement in an old house belonging to a hag in the worst part of the town. This was a guy who topped in his class and voted most likely to become successful.
