I got into @ycombinator in my mid-30s, a decade after walking past their office as an intern and thinking "someday, I'll start my own company." But instead of going for it, I took job after job and ended up working at Palantir, Thumbtack, Crew and Uber Freight. At 35 I ran out of excuses and built Narrative, a workflow tool. GOAT, SKIMS, and others ran their business on it, which meant every bug we shipped hit my phone at 10pm on a weekend (customers were catching them before we were, which humbles you fast). Testing was the one problem I'd circled my whole career. So we pivoted and rebuilt around it. Now Narrative catches bugs before your customers do, every time your engineers ship. Starting today, expect more posts about Narrative, and some about me. I've been told the algorithm wants both.

Founders ask me for YC application advice all the time, and it's almost always the same question: "is my idea good enough?" I usually just tell them what happened to me. I got into YC in 2023 and on the very day they accepted me, they told me they didn't like my idea and that I should pivot. The idea you apply with will most likely die anyway. So they don't spend much time judging it. What they're really checking is whether you can talk to users, get people to try your product, and explain what you're building without confusing everyone in the room. If you can do all that, the idea can always be fixed later.

What if taste is just how many times a day you file and fix bugs on your own startup?

5 years ago, i remember thinking, one day, i'll apply to @ycombinator 🟧 and here we are. i got the opportunity to work at a YC startup as a founding design engineer. i worked closely with founders building relentlessly and learned what it really takes to build a company. later, i started @rightfitso 🏴 over the last year, we've bootstrapped @rightfitso from scratch. no funding. just conviction, 10k+ conversations with founders and candidates, and an obsession with making hiring better through proof of work. along the way, we had the opportunity to work with some incredible YC startups + along with startups across bangalore, san francisco, and new york, helping them assemble their founding teams by hiring engineers, designers, and other early hires. every founder conversation, every hiring decision, and every role we helped close taught us a little more about what it takes to build an enduring company. today, we're no longer watching from the sidelines. we're applying with our own company. YC application: submitted 🤞 whether we get in or not, i'm already grateful for the journey. 5 years ago, applying to YC was just an idea i carried around. today, we finally hit submit. whatever happens next, we'll keep building 🖤

Demand for content is expected to grow 5x by 2027. The video editing workforce? Just 3% over the ENTIRE DECADE. You cannot solve that by hiring 5x more editors. The marketer + editor duo needs to become what PM + Eng became with AI: able to ship far more without lowering the quality. That is what we are building Cardboard for.
