नोएडा मज़दूर आंदोलन के लिए जेल में बंद पत्रकार सत्यम वर्मा और थिएटर आर्टिस्ट आकृति पर यूपी पुलिस ने राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा कानून (NSA) लगा दिया है. सत्यम वर्मा एक पत्रकार, सार्वजनिक बुद्धिजीवी, संपादक और अनुवादक हैं. उन्होंने यूनिवर्ता में कई वर्ष काम किया. वे “भगत सिंह और उनके साथियों के सम्पूर्ण उपलब्ध दस्तावेज़” की ऐतिहासिक कृति के संपादक हैं. रोमिला थापर की पुस्तक सोमनाथ का हिंदी अनुवाद किया है. वे जनपक्षधर बुद्धिजीवी रहे हैं, जिन्होंने हमेशा लोगों के न्यायसंगत संघर्ष के साथ एकजुटता दिखाई और अन्याय के खिलाफ असहमति की मजबूत आवाज बने. नोएडा में कभी न जाने और प्रदर्शनकारियों से कोई संपर्क न होने के बावजूद उनकी गिरफ्तारी असहमति की आवाज को कुचलने और दूसरों के लिए चेतावनी देने का स्पष्ट प्रयास है. मजदूर बिगुल की आकृति नोएडा श्रमिक मामले में एक महीने से अधिक समय से गिरफ्तार हैं. उन पर भी एनएसए लगाया जा रहा है. आकृति दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय से इतिहास में मास्टर्स और दौलत राम कॉलेज से ग्रेजुएट है. सत्यम वर्मा और आकृति पर एनएसए लगाना सभी लोकतांत्रिक आवाजों को कुचलने और डराने का प्रयास है.

White towels are a legacy of British era, when there were few roads, fewer cars and no ACs. Officer toured on horses and towels were an integral part of hygiene routine. British left, horses were sent away, but towels stayed! It’s not just towels, the size of tables and colour of ink are also defined by hierarchy. When I was working at Joint Secretary level with the Vice President of India, I had to fight a stiff battle of sorts to order a smaller table that would fit better in my office. The system would not approve of a smaller table! Regarding the colour of ink to be used for noting and signature, Sh. Arun Shourie has written a hilarious, if not ridiculous, memoir as minister. In 1999, two officers in the Ministry of Steel made notings on files using red and green ink. This raised a furore as they were junior officers. The seniors were scandalised and an enquiry was initiated. India’s bureaucracy spent 13 months debating which colour ink officers could use on files. The enquiry was routed through several ministries and departments: Ministry of Steel wrote to Dept of Administrative Reforms It referred to Directorate of Printing (ink experts) Printing referred to Dept of Personnel & Training (DoPT) DoPT threw the ball back: “it’s your Manual, you decide” National Archives was consulted for longevity of ink colours Ministry of Defence consulted for Army ink hierarchy Conclusion after 13 months: juniors wrote in blue-black or blue ink, because that has the longest life of impression. In British era, the files had to travel to Britain, so juniors would write in ink that would stay for the longest. The top brass would sign in green and red. Ruling: Two new paras were added to the manual of office procedure: Para 32(9) says that only officers of Joint Secretary level and above may use red or green ink, and that too only in rare cases. Para 68(5), on the other hand, does not limit the use of these colours to any particular rank (as modern ball pen ink have no issues of shelf life for any colour!) They are architecture, the physical grammar of a bureaucratic culture that worships hierarchy.

UPDATE: A Su-30MKI fighter had an undercarriage incident during landing last evening, keeping Pune runway closed for a few hours. Crew safe, aircraft sustained fixable damage. Runway opened at 8AM today.

We(me and my mom) were travelling to Kgp from Kolkata(Howrah) and had reservations in AC chair car(Steel express). The train got rescheduled/delayed by 2 hours and when we finally boarded our seats were taken by 2 men with no reservation and refused to move. We got into a verbal discourse and they started quoting that it’s election time and they have every right to override reservations?! Finally after a heated argument they left the seats but kept standing inside the compartment and kept harassing the passengers. The menace was just bad. @IRCTCofficial @EasternRailway
