Slavery in the Old Testament was more like indentured servitude. It was the only feasible welfare policy for the destitute. You swapped your personal liberty for security in a household. You said, "Please house and feed me and mine, and we will work for you." Otherwise, what was there? No centralized center for distributing goods, and for nomadic peoples, no centralized anything for anything. The Old Testament also made rules to keep the evil of the practice to a minimum. For example, slaves could be educated and often rose to high positions, e.g., as advisors to royalty. Slaves could become wealthy and buy their freedom. If you kidnapped someone and made him a slave, you were put to death. If a slave escaped from his master for whatever reason, you were not allowed to return him. If you harmed so much as a tooth of your slave, you had to let him go free—in other words, no person was allowed to keep a slave if he mistreated him or her. Slavery in Western countries would never even have gotten off the ground had these rules been followed; the first rule alone would have prevented it.

@TBDF12 Because I am the one asking questions. Even if you were to suppose an intellectual exchange between the two parties, that would imply my question ACTUALLY be answered first. In every scenario, I need not answer a question. Not yet, at least.

In the 3rd and 4th centuries Christian authors had to explain in their writings why women and slaves should have an equal place in the afterlife to emperors and men. The claim that contemporary Western ethics are just universal inclinations is evidently false.

@TBDF12 My issue with Act 3's writing is that it clashes with the momentum generated with Act 2's ending. It results in a Act 3 that feels like its disconnected. You saw armies marching onto the city and then nothing happens. Nothing is really explained why and the momentum is just lost.

Alan Moore probably just became bitter that his most popular character became a libertarian/right wing icon, and he probably saw a couple of fans at conventions that ticked him off, so he just shits on him these days. He amplified all these traits for V and he also genuinely hates that he's seen as a hero as well.

@gringoblunga @EDG_Eat It was the lack of safe sex and gay people didn't use condoms much back then, cause before aids it wasn't a big deal. The church did tell a much of third world nations to not use condoms and that they don't stop AIDS

@EDG_Eat I'm pretty ignorant on the topic, but wasn't it primarily homosexuals spreading aids? The catholics have a fairly clear stance on gay sex to begin with.

Dave Ramsey tells a 25 year old not to give his broke mom money in retirement Caller: "I’m 25 and I’ve been trying to help my mom get out of debt for 3 years. She’s turning 60, wants to retire in 3 years, and still has $40,000 in debt" Dave: "Tell her, If you need some help, yeah. If you want some coaching, fine but I’m going to be giving you zero money when you’re old, so you probably should figure this out" “I will help you by teaching you. I will never help you by giving you money, period.”

Young men today have never been more ostracized. There’s not a single place or institution where they can get even an ounce of basic respect. However, once this horrific system collapses, people will be begging smart, able-bodied young men to come save it. But why should they? Will any of the solutions people have been scoffing at for years finally be taken seriously? Is society ready to: • Take political rights away from women • End our geriatric welfare state • Dismantle foreign labor and girl boss DEI • Economically prioritize young men …along with many other things that young women and older generations consider “extreme.” So I have to ask, how bad do things have to get before people finally start listening?

@memeticsisyphus What’s astonishing to me is that western secularists will say things like “everyone knows murder and pedophilia are bad” and then either short circuit or deflect when you point out the cultures currently doing child marriages and genocides/slavery across Africa

A big problem I’m discovering is childless people thinking they came to their own morality sometime around 5-7. Completely ignorant of the work their parents and family put into instructing their morality. They don’t see it. They honestly think they’re the ones who came to their moral sense on their own. It’s the atomistic vision of the self, ignorant to the ties that brought you here.
