@xeryc @AlexMuccini It leaves something out that Nolan considers irrelevant for the viewing experience outside of an IMAX 1.43 screen. I personally don't, but it would go against his intent for the film to envelop the audience in as many places as possible.

@HumanCinepede @WillCates44 It's intended to fill your periphery. It's why initially they also built them as curved screens in domes. So you can sit somewhere too far from the centre seat for it to technically work to that effect. But that's negligible.

@WillCates44 Yeah. I don’t understand IMAX. If you’re not gonna utilize that extra area with anything then it’s just more negative space?

@xeryc @AlexMuccini Downscaling might not be the best word for it, but neither is cropping. Nolan makes 70mm and 35mm second generation prints from the 1.43 positive and bases his DCPs on those. So 1.43 becoming 2.20 is less a crop than literally being the maximum printable area for a 5/70mm print.

@filmsbyhen I agree because I think there is something to seeing the full exposed frame even if it isn't all vital, but to be fair to Nolan, his whole thing has been about achieving the maximum effect in every screen format, with the IMAX negative being the most maleable to use for that.

@datnofact But it's not a set-in-stone fate for his film he has chosen. More screens and projectors can be built and there is nothing to suggest Nolan would rather limit them.

@Armin00_ It is strange that following the IMAX success Dune Part Two and Sinners they weren't fast tracked, but also I think that might speak to the fact that they've been waiting to see if the format had Nolan-legs beyond Nolan.

Since Oppenheimer’s release there definitely should have been a lot more new IMAX screens built around the world, but ppl saying it shouldn’t exist are also being ridiculous tbh. I just hope they lock in and make it more accessible asap.

@artwithinpod As long as Nolan and his team consider that extra latitude secondary information/stimulus for your periphery vision in front of an IMAX screen alone, it ain't gonna happen. It should! But it won't.

Surely The Odyssey will be the movie where the physical media release finally includes the full 70mm aspect ratio, right? RIGHT?????

@McJunegrand @BenGSchout But it's something he is playing a significant role in preserving and rejuvenating. He didn't start shooting and distributing on a less-and-less accessible format to make it even less accessible.

@BenGSchout Getting real sick of Nolan's boner for IMAX when he knows full well the majority of theaters in the whole planet can't show the format.

@BenGSchout @The24thFrame I don't know... you go through Kodak's list of film productions that have used their film stock, and there's many up-and-coming names that are on there because Kodak didn't stop producing motion picture film stock a decade ago. kodak.com/en/motion/page…

@The24thFrame That's a tremendous accomplishment but as far as I can tell all that's done is let the people who already shoot on film keep shooting it and elevate the IMAX 70MM format into a tourist attraction. As far as I can tell, it is not any easier for young filmmakers to shoot on film

@An_Actual_mole @ItsJustPup Marvel Studios really should have put more protections in place to ensure their usual reshoot and VFX pipelines wouldn't cause massive visual inconsistencies in quality, to the massive detriment of Coogler and Rachel Morrison's work.

@TGCFilms @ItsJustPup Black panther was such a horrible mess in terms of visuals, seeing any of coogler's work outside the mcu shows you the studio really hates letting creatives do what they want

I think when we keep blaming Jon Watts for the look of the previous MCU Spider-Man films, it does need to be acknowledged that MCU films have clearly in-general made an effort to look better as of late. Reminder, Bill Pope was DOP for Quantumania, his work is better than this:

@comicaccuracy But no shots in an MCU film that aren't VFX shots look this washed out? It's very much is (or was, I haven't been keeping up) an inconsistent element of Marvel Studio's output that they would cut from a saturated or contrast-y scene to something flat, grey, and less compelling.

Yea. This looks like shit. If it was in an MCU (by one of the guys folks decided not to like) it would be dogpiled because of how grey and washed out it looks. Thats just the reality. Thinking that the creatives of the MCU are less talented doesn’t change that.

@ftersuns It would be a problem for an MCU film to use a colour grade this flat and desaturated (which none of them ever have despite what anyone will say) because few, if any, have consistent looks. The same with a high-contrast, high-saturation grade. They don't produce films for that.

@DanJFilms @jeremylovesyall True but the people suggesting that a bump in contrast and/or saturation would objectively fix what they subjectively dislike are completely neglecting what we know about this film and those involved.

everyone learned the wrong lessons from all the colour grading discourse over the years so now people think if a film looks desaturated at all then that's inherently a flaw and not a stylistic choice

@jeremylovesyall The "grey = bad" thing has stuck around, cycling through new generations whilst the rest of us moved beyond it over half a decade ago. There's so many "visual trait = bad" opinions around with no nuance, and all based around the 4 still images appreciation of cinematography.

@Ajaxin I think first and foremost the UK and and surrounding countries need more IMAX GTs built or restored and reopened so that tickets aren't bought up by the fine people who are forced to travel.

There are no tickets available for Odyssey at BFI IMAX for the next two weeks. London needs a lot more true IMAX screens.

@bayomob The choice completely visually nullifies his presence. Across the board they should be leaning into these bolder, more individually distinguishable, and iconic designs; as the rule not the exception.

@1610SPlDEY It would be so much better and fun if he was in a mid 20th century suburban family man getup. The look they've gone for is too "off-duty solider", essentially a non-uniform uniform, and not that of a retired veteran of WW2 and the many wars he fought out of time.
