This is close to the budget for my school district in Georgia, and they are requesting more funding. Can we get that money to help lower our property taxes? I attempted to use the Freedom of Information Act to obtain records from the district, but they are wanting to charge me $7,000 for the request.

I submitted two public records requests to SCCPSS—one for personnel info and another for contracts—because no one seems able to pinpoint where we can trim the budget. My thought? Let the public figure it out. The response? A $5,000+ fee for the contracts and $1,500 for staff lists with job duties. I’m seriously worried that this level of contract detail hasn’t been requested before—or isn’t readily available—to those tasked with fiscal oversight, like SCCPSS board members or district leaders. The fact that contract scopes and costs haven’t been closely examined raises big red flags about accountability and whether terms are even being followed. This just proves why the public deserves access to this info. Maybe state auditors, the Board of Education, or legislators will step up and dig into this, because I can’t shell out these insane fees—and honestly, we shouldn’t have to. Thoughts?
