Happy and proud to share that the last paper from my dissertation, “White-tailed deer population dynamics in a multi-predator landscape shaped by humans,” is published in @ESAApplications 🦌🐺🌲👩‍🌾 Reach out if you’d like a copy, and follow along for a 🧵 doi.org/10.1002/eap.30…

Happy to share our new paper out today!! 🦌🔥🌳 We investigate the plasticity of deer movement and behavior following a major megafire in Northern California @HoplandREC. TL;DR : Deer can adjust their behaviors to keep up with a rapidly changing landscape! doi.org/10.1186/s40462…

@TRGanz @ESAApplications Very nice study! We're hoping to initiate a similar look at deer in our corner of Minnesota (pending funding approval!), this paper will be extremely useful for our planning. Looking forward to an in-depth read of it!

Huge thanks to our #WAPredatorPreyProject team, including our field crews who captured 400+ animals, conducted 250+ habitat surveys and dissected 100+ deer. Thanks to local landowners who provided property access, and generous funders like @RMEF. (8/9)

Habitat was the MOST important influence on the deer population growth rate. Recently (< 20 yrs) logged forests had 55% more biomass of understory plants (deer food), leading to higher deer survival. If the habitat for deer improves, their population should increase. (3/9)

We collared 280 deer, 33 bobcats, 50 cougars, 28 coyotes, and 14 wolves in NE WA (2016-2021), tracking their survival, reproduction, and movement. The deer population was stable to slightly declining over the study period, but what drove this trend? (2/9)
