I’m in Warsaw on Memorial Day, but thinking of the Ollis family back home. Their son, Army SSG Michael Ollis, was killed in Afghanistan when he rushed forward to stop enemy insurgents who had launched a complex attack on Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Afghanistan. As he was engaging the enemy along the perimeter, an insurgent came around the corner. Ollis positioned himself between the insurgent and a Polish soldier he was fighting alongside with, who was wounded in both legs and unable to walk. Ollis fired upon the insurgent, who detonated his suicide vest. Ollis gave his life to protect that of a fellow Coalition soldier. I got to meet his wonderful parents Bob and Linda Ollis, as well as his amazing sisters, who never stopped fighting for Michael to receive the Medal of Honor, which he did posthumously in March from President Trump. Today is to recognize the sacrifice of all our fallen heroes like Michael Ollis, whose life and legacy is not only celebrated within the U.S., but here in Poland as well.

A powerful moment of remembrance and gratitude last night at @LoanDepotPark as the #SteelAcrossAmerica tour stopped in Miami for the @marlins game against the @mets. A piece of sacred 9/11 World Trade Center steel allowed fans to #NeverForget before the game. Then USMC Lance Corporal Thomas Parker threw the first pitch of the game and was surprised with a mortgage-free smart home that has been custom made for his needs as a triple amputee and a father of 6. ⚾ Thank you to the Marlins organization for helping share this tribute and ensuring the legacy of service, courage, and unity continues to reach communities across the country. #NeverForget

BREAKING: President Trump announces that 9/11 hero Welles Crowther will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Known as “The Man in the Red Bandana,” Crowther repeatedly ran back into the South Tower on 9/11 to help others escape, saving as many as 18 lives before losing his own. Allison Crowther said her son’s legacy continues to endure nearly 25 years later: “Welles’ light still shines brightly.”
