On this day in 1993, the "Storm of the Century" formed in the Gulf. It produced a blizzard from Dixie Alley to the Northeast, widespread damaging winds, and a storm surge up to 12 feet along with a deadly tornado outbreak in Florida. 318 were killed & damage totaled $5.5 billion.


After conducting a post-storm analysis, the NHC determined that Hurricane Melissa peaked at 190 mph, tying Hurricane Allen as the strongest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded based on wind speed. Absolutely historic.

The analyzed central pressure at 7 am EST was 966 mb. This is an estimated 41 mb drop in 24 hours compared to yesterday's analysis at the same of 1007 mb.



@NWSSPC meteorologists issued 26 winter mesoscale discussions (MDs) in the past 48 hrs. The most winter MDs for any 2 day period in our database (2008-present). Previous record: 20 (Feb 21-22, 2011) Nearly 8000 winter storm reports issued by @NWS offices during the same period.
