NEW: Elderly widow tricked into withdrawing $17,500 in cash and handing it over to a serial scammer
The money was supposed to help pay off the woman’s medical bills following cancer treatment last year
The scam began when the woman tried to log in to her online banking but couldn’t access her accounts
She called a number she had saved as the bank in her contacts and was transferred to what she believed was the PayPal fraud department
After hanging up due to poor call quality, she dialed another number she found online
During that call, she was told she had to pay an $82 charge that would be refunded
The man manipulated her into giving him access to her computer and transferred $18,000 from her savings to her checking account
The man instructed her to go to the bank and retrieve the cash
The woman withdrew $17,500. The man told her she could keep the extra $500 'for her troubles'
Linghui Zheng is charged with obtaining property under false pretenses
Zheng and an accomplice also face charges in Person, Durham, and Granville counties for obtaining property under false pretenses, accessing computers, and felony conspiracy
Together, they are accused of scamming people out of around $400,000
