Elon Musk had already mentioned several times before that the current hardware (HW4) would be sufficient once the software matured, but the “Yup” reply on January 18-19, 2026, is the clearest and most direct confirmation that HW4/AI4 is enough for unsupervised autonomy, without needing to switch to HW5 for current Model Y vehicles. This is consistent with the deployment of driverless Robotaxis in Austin, which indeed use this same standard production hardware.

If you own a Tesla with HW4/AI4, Tesla never said you’ll ever receive Unsupervised Full Self-Driving on that vehicle. This includes cars being sold today. You’re welcome!

Tesla has no upgrade path for HW3 vehicles with paid FSD because, quite simply, no such path exists. Even HW4 vehicles aren’t capable of unsupervised FSD yet, and Tesla hasn’t provided any clear timeline or roadmap for when that will change.
