we need to decide on a font to indicate "this is a prompt to an LLM" in a design doc. 𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚘 𝚖𝚎𝚊𝚗𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜 𝚒𝚜 𝚌𝚘𝚍𝚎, but what means "this is a prompt"?

@TravisseHansen curious what makes it feel "hacked together"? i'm on the product team @ Retool—we're thinking a lot about the methodologies and mental models that let you build really complex apps.

I have mixed feelings about Retool. On the one hand time to value is insane. On the other you end up with an extremely hacked together product and process that you end up needing to unwind as you build it into the real product.

@patio11 Totally. Why does it feel like it has an equally scammy side to the hype? I’m trying to remember if when the iPhone came out we had people shilling newsletters. I guess that was the era when everyone’s uncle had a idea for a killer app?

As folks know, I'm something of a crypto skeptic, but if it were simply in a vacuum: I don't know how anyone could look at last 12 months of AI developments and not conclude "Most interesting technical development since, hmm, at least mobile."

using these llm's to write code is a lot like using a roomba to vacuum your house. you can pay way less attention, but you're going to have a lot of dusty corners.

I've wanted to write a rich history of Microsoft's Visual Basic for a long time. VB pioneered visual programming and had 3.5M developers(!) at its peak, but was lost to the sands of time. A short 18 months and 5,000 words later, it's finally finished👉 retool.com/visual-basic/

@kevinwhinnery Been thinking about this too. Worried that creating original work requires creating a lot of unoriginal work first. We’ll need a lot more intentional ways to help coders/artists/scholars bridge that gap, when the $ you can get from the intermediate work is 0.

For code, art, and scholarship, AI will drive the value of derivative / unoriginal work to near zero, and I think that is a good thing. In the best case, AI is a high-speed elevator to the top of the shoulders of giants.

There are two "laws of physics" of low-code: 1. Things that are built fast, decay fast. 2. Things that are powerful are complicated. The best products will be at a point on efficient frontier. The best companies will find the point with the biggest market.
