In a somewhat obscure provincial Chinese city right now. I stand by what I said about China a few years ago: it's "Second World plus Zeroeth World, without First World." You get out of the futuristic bullet train, hop a fence to get out of the train station bc the planners never thought hard about how to integrate the station with the real city...and then you're basically in a world of tuktuks and scooters. Another observation: the kinds of things US socialists want to socialize (childcare etc) are heavily marketized here. The kinds of things China does through communist central planning (trains, grand new urban parks, etc) US socialists don't really like doing at all because it's too "masculinist" or something.


If given their own right of way, signal priority and stations, buses can act like a light rail system but for much cheaper.
