Alle reden über Karenztage. Noch schlimmer finde ich die Tatsache, dass Arbeitsverträge künftig 4 Jahre (!) befristet werden können, bevor es die Möglichkeit eines Festvertrages gibt. 4 Jahre keine Planungssicherheit, keine Kredite, Probleme bei der Urlaubsplanung, Umzug usw!

@gokulns @alexanderjaeger Firing employees is feasible easy in Germany as is — from 6 months of probation to voluntary mutual termination agreements and of course operational redundancies. The bigger challenge why tech workers don’t move to Germany is the unwelcoming visa hurdles, finding an apartment

@alexanderjaeger @TechWorkersBER I'm very grateful that the social net exists. And I'm happy to pay into it for others. But the social engine needs to be funded by an economic engine that's robust. You need pro business regulation to an extent to get this economic engine going.

As an employee in Germany who would be affected by this, I am so happy that this is happening and that my employer can fire me at-will. This feels like the start of a flywheel. 1. I do think €180,000 is too high a number as threshold. It should be €100,000. This will allow FAANG for eg: to hire more freely in Germany [which they don't today partly because it's super hard to fire people]. This in turn will rise all boats and increase competition for talent at the 100-160k levels. It'll also help startups. [I guess they will get here - 180k is just a starting point]. 2. I think this needs to be coupled with weakening the Betriebsrat (Works Council) and Collective Bargaining Agreements - they are IMO the bane of German industry. Will be a tougher sell given how entrenched they are, but hopefully to incentivize FAANG-type employers, we defang these [lol] 3. This should ideally be coupled with a merit-based immigration stance (eg: the Danish / Dutch type tax rebates etc.] so that exceptionally skilled people consider Europe a viable destination (given how awesome Blue Card is vis-a-vis the H1B nightmare) Merz absolutely lacks charisma but dude knows how economics works, lol.

What I’m hearing: Instagram’s Trust and Safery org absolutely gutted the last few weeks. ~60% of the org gone - between layoffs and forced reassignments to data labelling. All while “AI maxxing” pushed a bunch of bugs to prod. And hence why today’s massive Insta account takeover happening.

🇮🇪 Solidarity with Meta content moderators at Covalen in Ireland as the outsourcing company plans to lay off 700 workers. “What is happening in Dublin today is also happening in every corner of the globe. Tech companies are treating the workers whose labour and data helped build AI as disposable. To fight back, it’s absolutely critical that workers organize and demand notice about the introduction of AI, training linked to employment and a plan for their futures. Workers should also have the right to refuse to train their AI replacements,” said UNI Global Union General Secretary, Christy Hoffman. “It’s time the likes of Meta and TikTok took responsibility for the workers who made their platforms possible, not discard them without a second thought – and they should think carefully about what is lost when experience and human judgement are thrown out the door.” Digital and Techworkers Alliance (DATA), which is part of UNI’s Irish affiliate, the Communications Workers’ Union, represents several hundred workers at the outsourcing company.
