@apart_blown @darwintojesus At this point, I believe I am supposed to shake the dust off my sandals and move on. I wasn't always a Christian and at one point embraced and used those kind of arguments. In fact it was a book presenting those arguments that started the shift in my thinking.

Sorry to have to do this to you, but I'm going to tell you how the magic trick is performed. The Gospels were written decades after the events they describe. The authors already knew the Old Testament prophecies and had every incentive to present Jesus as fulfilling them. That's not a miracle. That's exactly what you'd expect if followers believed he was the Messiah and wanted to make the case for it. If I write a biography of someone today and deliberately shape the story around a set of ancient predictions, that doesn't prove the predictions came true. It only proves I knew the predictions. What would actually impress me is a prophecy that was specific, unambiguous, and independently verified by contemporary sources. Not broad statements that can be interpreted multiple ways, followed by accounts written years later by people who already knew what they were trying to prove. That's not evidence of someone outside time. That's how religious storytelling works.

Both mother and father had to be descended from Jacob and the father had to be a descendant of Aaron. The other priesthood predates Aaron and even Abraham. 1 of 2

@apart_blown @darwintojesus The evidence for His existence is in the prophecies about Jesus given long before His birth. These prophecies are not humanly possible. Someone who exists outside of our time told us He would come. And He did.

I understand the analogy, but I think that's where you and I part ways. A homeowner making rules for their house is one thing. A being creating the entire universe, creating me without my consent, setting the rules, and then attaching eternal consequences to whether I follow them is something very different. My concern was never legalism versus grace. It's the underlying authority structure itself. Even if the burden is light and the yoke is easy, the question remains: what happens if I sincerely conclude that the ruler of the universe hasn't provided sufficient evidence that he exists? That's where the analogy breaks down for me.

@apart_blown @darwintojesus That's because he preached a liberty in Christ that seemed like licentiousness to the legalistic mindset of the religious. That it seems to me is the experience that turned you away. Jesus is so much more then that.

@apart_blown @darwintojesus The same concept served me to understand the idea of God making rules. However, when Jesus says His burden is light and His yoke is easy; He really means it. Paul wrote that people who didn't get it, accused him of teaching that we should sin more so that grace could abound.
