The spectacle created over Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill attending a football match, played in her home country, by her home country, is an indictment on how little progress we have really made in the political arena. Nationalists & Catholics have been attending and supporting Northern Ireland games for decades. That this was a “first” for a Nationalist in OFMDFM is actually a point of embarrassment, not one of acclamation. It shows just how far the public are ahead of Sinn Fein, meanwhile the party bizarrely continues to receive plaudits for slowly catching up in some areas? The way the media fawn over Sinn Fein for displaying the most simple gestures of respect, like standing for a national anthem, must be perplexing to someone not from Northern Ireland. These simple acts are viewed as commonplace across the world and would be expected from every decent respectful citizen. Perhaps it is a reminder just how divisive and toxic Sinn Féin’s legacy is on this island, that even the most simple and insignificant act of respect is met with astonishment and adulation.
