Abbott appointees have nothing to do with the individual tax and spend local ISD Boards. This is the way the game is played. Big developers pay for the campaign for the VATRE and/or bond debt. ISD then picks the election date for the lowest possible turnout. The tax and spend measure almost always passes. Some in the ISD Swamp say its like fishing in a bucket. If you are serious about stopping this voter suppression and corruption, I urge @TexasAFT to get behind @brianeharrison 's bill to outlaw pay to play. If you donate to a VATRE or ISD bond campaign, you or your business can NOT get any contracts with the ISD or access any of the funding.

Real Texans would know that. The fund had debt because those in power shortchange their obligations. ZC

Big developers getting rich off of school bonds is your tribe not mine. I do agree many Republicans are in the back pocket of the public employee unions of Texas. No other state blows billions of tax dollars every two years on your underfunded pension system. Time to fix that mess once and for all or let it go into bankruptcy court as they did in Detroit. Taxpayers should not be on the hook for spending billions on keeping the pension afloat. Let the current employees pay more or move it to a 401K plan. Real Texans know.

Please save us from your spin on VATREs and more bond debt. We all know how the game works. Big developer donors drop tens of thousands to fund the campaign for higher taxes and more bond debt. The ISD Swamp then plays the voter suppression game by picking an election date for the lowest possible turn out. They are called ghost elections. No one shows up except ISD employees and ISD vendors. After the tax hike or bond measure is passed, magically the big donor developers are awarded the new building contracts for new schools and new NFL type stadiums. In most states its called PAY to PLAY. In Texas its called ISD control. Everyone get rich except the the taxpayer who gets the bill. NAEP test scores come from the local school district. I'm not seeing how Abbott is involved with lower 4th and 8th grade math and reading scores. How about just copy and paste what Tennessee and the other Southern states are doing? It starts with removing the power to tax from the local ISD school district.

Academic policies have primarily been taken away from ISDs and are handed down from the Governor’s ofc. Real Texans know that. ZC.

You mean controlling the locals correct? The ISD Swamp is bankrupt Texas homeowners and small businesses with their never ending property tax hikes. When has your union ever stood up for lower taxes and better results for students? Let me answer that for you, NEVER. Also, Texas continues to drop further behind other Southern States in NAEP results. Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Tennessee lead the way in what the WSJ calls the Southern Surge. Texas spends much more per student than any of those four states but with worse results. AFT does help Texas lead the country with some of the highest property tax bills in the nation. Always a good day when teachers are at the Capitol! I was proud to step out between hearings to visit with members of the @TexasAFT and thank them for their tireless work on behalf of Texas students. With the House debating major bills affecting public education today—HB 2 and SB 2—there’s no better reminder of what’s at stake than hearing directly from the educators who show up for our kids every single day, in and out of the classroom.
