Always a good day when teachers are at the Capitol! I was proud to step out between hearings to visit with members of the @TexasAFT and thank them for their tireless work on behalf of Texas students. With the House debating major bills affecting public education today—HB 2 and SB 2—there’s no better reminder of what’s at stake than hearing directly from the educators who show up for our kids every single day, in and out of the classroom. @TexasAFT @CWA6186 TRS & ERS retirees — our state’s former teachers, school district staff, and university & agency employees — dedicated their lives to serving our communities, but our state is failing them in retirement. Last session’s COLA was a start, but our retirees deserve more. 8/

Texas public school teachers earn around $9k less annually than the national average. Meanwhile, the 2024 @texasaft member survey shows 74.8% of educators are burnt out and 68.9% are thinking of leaving the profession. Our teachers, students, and communities deserve better! 6/
