@RussoHockey @nytimes Top notch tribute. Amazingly there's a lot of light shining despite this devastating tragedy and you captured that. Beautifully done guys.

if a team is deciding between taking a wide receiver vs a running back in the top 10, they don’t even have to do any fancy calculations. they just have to look at how much the highest paid players at each position are making
Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

Highest paid receivers in the NFL on a per-year basis: 🏈Jaxon Smith-Njigba: $42.15M 🏈Ja’Marr Chase: $40.25M 🏈Justin Jefferson: $35M 🏈CeeDee Lamb: $34M 🏈DK Metcalf: $33M 🏈Garrett Wilson: $32.5M

Friendly reminder that Justin Jefferson is a bargain
Ian Rapoport@RapSheet

The #Seahawks and Jaxon Smith-Njigba have a deal, as he is now the highest paid WR in the NFL, getting a 4-year, $168.6M contract extension with $120M guaranteed, per his agent at @WinSportsGroup.

Family isn’t always blood, but the people you choose and that couldn’t have been more true. Jessi was like another big sister to me. She had a confidence and a way of being able to talk to anyone that I envied. She had an unmatched work ethic and a huge heart. Any time I needed help, needed to rant, or needed someone she was there without hesitation. Most importantly, she was the best mom and loved her kids and family fiercely. She brought me into her world and introduced me to her family and friends and I’m so grateful she did. Hudson, Cayden and Avery were the best kids and I’m so grateful she let me be part of their lives. The visits on game days, being able to come to their house and hang out with the family are memories I cherish. There’s not enough pictures, videos, memories I can share in one post. There’s so much more I want to say that I can’t find the words for yet. I hope you know how loved you are and could see the outpouring of love for you and your family from the hockey community today. I hope you know how much I love you and how missed you will be. Thank you for everything. Please keep Mike, the family, and everyone who loved Jessi in your prayers.

I have no words for what the past 21 hours or so have been like since finding out about Jessi and her three beautiful children. She was so many things to the hockey community and to our podcast. Funny, intelligent, never afraid to speak her mind and I could go on. On Friday, ...

Yesterday was an absolute nightmare and it hasn’t subsided. Jessi was so much more than just a contributor to us, she was a friend, a super mom, and a wife. She commanded every room she walked in. I was literally booking a tee time with her on Thursday. I’m heartbroken.

There are no words to express how heartbroken we all are. Jessi Pierce (Hinrichs) was the most vibrant person - the life of the party, always with a smile on her face, always bringing a passion to every article and podcast and interview she did. Jessi simply loved covering the Wild and hockey throughout Minnesota and had a way of brightening everyone’s day with her upbeat, bubbly personality. I have literally NEVER met anybody that had a way of being EVERYBODY’s friend. More than anything, she absolutely loved Hudson, Cayden and Avery and was the greatest mother who did everything she could to bring joy to her sweetest kids. Even at Friday’s practice in her beloved Iowa State sweatshirt, she was so excited to take them to the seasonal opening of Cup and Cone in WBL. Seeing those precious pics yesterday, she provided them with another incredibly fun and loving day. My heart breaks for Mike for the loss of his wife and children and Jessi’s family, friends and colleagues for this unimaginable loss. This hockey community lost a wonderful, energetic and one of a kind voice and story teller and Grade A person. Life can be unbearably unfair sometimes, and it’s impossible to make sense of this tragedy. Please keep Jessi and her beautiful kids in your thoughts and prayers. I wish Mike all the peace and support and happiness in the world. A lot of tears were shed at the arena yesterday. We, in the Wild media and inside the Wild, will miss seeing Jessi everyday, laughing with her everyday. The press box and press room won’t be the same without her. It’ll be a lot quieter, a lot less funny. But her passion and joy for covering this hockey team and sport will remain. Sorry for the length of this, but as Jessi knew better than most as my original Athletic “backup” and somebody who always gave me Minnesota Hockey Journal deadline extensions, as she used to joke, I’m incapable of writing tight. Especially about her. RIP Jessi, Hudson, Cayden and Avery. 🙏💔

Just hearing the news about the loss of Jessi and her kids in a house fire. Absolutely gutted. Jessi was such a bright, shining light in this media market. Enthusiastic, smart, funny, warm and wholly original. Such a big fan of her work, but more so her as a person. Heartbreaking

BREAKING: The White House is out with a new National Policy framework for AI. The proposal says: "States should not be permitted to regulate AI development." It also says that states shouldn't be able to penalize AI companies when people break the law with their models.

@PhilMackey They also loved to run AP into a wall over and over, run the same exact run play 2 plays in a row, etc. (too predictable) So for me it's more about the failure to reach the ceiling.

@nacholeber @allthingsmn Makes absolutely zero sense to even consider him #1 now. They also won't have enough first string snaps for 2 let alone 3. If he's #1 just bc of system knowledge they've lost the plot.

@AlanaKStewart @JessicaTarlov @TheFive Your ignorance is showing. Voter ID has never been the problem. It's always been the scummy way Repubs have wanted to implement it. It's always a rush with no long term plan on the infrastructure necessary for millions & millions of ppl requesting new IDs + cost to voters.

Republicans aren’t the one that are lying @JessicaTarlov. We watch you spew out disinformation every day on @TheFive. Have you not noticed that 85% of Americans want voter ID to protect our elections? That includes minorities as well. It’s insulting to black Americans to imply that they’re not intelligent enough to get a voter ID. Same with women! You have to have ID to get in the building where you work @FoxNews. #saveact #voterID
Jessica Tarlov@JessicaTarlov

Republicans are lying to the American people when they say the SAVE Act is a voter ID law—it’s a proof-of-citizenship requirement that would make voting harder, if not impossible, for a lot of people. Passports are expensive, documents don’t always match, and the process can be a mess (been there). We should be making voting easier, not adding more hurdles. Democrats can own this by proposing their own bill that accepts a range of IDs, and includes automatic voter registration and Election Day as a national holiday for starters.

Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.
Dr. Lemma@DoctorLemma

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”
