Severe and tornadic thunderstorms erupt in the Central Plains. Parts of Kansas and Nebraska are under a PDS tornado watch today.

🚨 BREAKING UPDATE: The Simi Valley, California fire is officially ENGULFING HOMES Winds are high, and this fire is spreading QUICKLY. Pray these folks heeded the evacuation warnings 🙏🏻 Evacuations are underway, and air assets have been deployed to fight this fire. It's EXPLODED from 10 acres to 180+ acres in a VERY short period of time.

NEW: A PDS, or Particularly Dangerous Situation, tornado watch has been issued. PDS watches feature a 3X chance of a violent tornado. Spend the afternoon and evening no more than 5 minutes from a shelter. Be home from school/work by 1:45 p.m. CT.

Something that is catching my eye today is that the synoptics feel misplaced. With a curved jet, lift is found over the entire exit with suppression on the backside. Notice the zone of lift is given a glancing blow to our supercells across NE Kansas and SE Nebraska. The overall pattern is sliding along the edge of the risk area rather than arcing into the warm sector. Feels like a partial failure mode today playing out. Still, a robust environment remains regardless, and we are still far from being over today. The day is still young.

Super El Niño: A freight train of warm water continues to chug across the subsurface Pacific Ocean. The level of warmth is record-breaking in some areas, peaking around 7˚C (13˚F) above average. This heat should lead to more intense El Niño projections in May model updates.

The strongest El Niño in 150 years? Yes, it’s legitimately possible. Not hype. In fact, the “median” forecast for December of all of our computer models combined is slightly “above” the biggest event we know of back in 1877. (+2.9 vs +2.7 using ONI) While this peak intensity may or may not occur, all signs are pointing to a Super El Niño - a “natural” oscillation. That will expel stored heat from the deep Tropical Pacific - on top of significant longterm warming - heating Earth to record levels not measured before in late 2026-2027, powering extreme heat waves, droughts, and rain storms… while also suppressing Atlantic hurricane season 1/ #ElNino #extremeweather #science

SATURDAY: Is going to be a severe weather day in Florida. We have issued a FOX 35 Storm Team Alert because of this. I can see the need personally for further upgrading to a Level 3 risk with future outlooks from NWS. Tornadoes are going to be favored with damaging winds in the yellow also. I believe there is enough wind shear present for a strong tornado threat as well, hence we could see a more targeted outlook increasing this. Talking a line of severe storms rolling across in the afternoon and evening Saturday for central Florida. More to come.
