Even as a born and raised New Yorker, tough to get worked up about this. NYC elites haven't suffered enough for their dumb politics. Goldman Sachs went 13:1 for Harris over Trump in donations. Big Law firms went 8:1. Play footsie with socialism, get kicked where it hurts

No more takes from non-New Yorkers on this. “It takes 40 minutes to go four stops on the L train” is disqualifying.

Again with the "boomer" bullshit. Look I got up every morning put my work boots on and went to an underground mine to work my 12 hr shift. Most of you just read that and thought eww I could never do that, and you'd be right. I did it for 40 yrs. Not all of us sat in an air conditioned office counting beans. Many of us have grade 10 and when we got our first job it was "ok your a man now out of the house you go". I was 17 when that happened. We did not sit around scheming about how we were going to screw the next generation. Housing prices went up, we had nothing to do with that. More foreigners came into the country, we had nothing to do with that. We had no idea what the future was going to bring. If you want to place blame, blame it on your government and stop voting liberal because the more they take away from people the more expensive life gets. Not the other way around. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Inflation hits us just as hard as it hits you.

@TheyCallMeNans So what’s your beef? There’s no earned equity/discount overtime. There are carveouts to protect seniors in many states though. But if your neighborhood becomes to expensive over time you gotta either figure out how to pay it or move elsewhere. Can’t kick the can elsewhere

Gen X here and I & my hubs worked our ass off to get what we have built. I pay my property taxes every year and have never bitched. But now that you bring it up… 😂😂😂

@HollyCabot So you then support funding those programs beyond their expected end date in 5 - 10 years from now? Or should Boomers be the last ones to actually get to collect. Millennials will have paid in for 30 years and have nothing waiting for them when they retire.

You do realize the Boomers paid the social security, medicare and all the handouts for the previous generations, right? Why do you think it should stop now because Gen Z finally has to pony up..

@beachmamax2 Same could be said for renters too though. Prices are up for everyone. It’s not a constitutional right you get to stay in one place forever. Wish it was but that’s no longer the economic reality we live in.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I do know it’s not right to see someone lose their home bc of skyrocketing property tax rates after spending 30 years paying it off. Especially people on fixed incomes, like a lot seniors are.

@TX_Duck_810 Because you’re not a sovereign entity. You have more rights and claims over the land when you buy it but it still ultimately belongs to the country/state/town. Property tax funds all sorts of local things like infrastructure, emergency services, schools, etc.

I think, regardless of age, once you pay off your house you shouldn’t pay anymore property tax, why do I need to perpetually “rent” my own property from the government that I paid for 30 years to own.

@EV_Trapper @devahaz We all pay for the schools where we live. You don’t get to pick your taxes à la carte. Should childless adults get a tax exemption then? If you can’t afford to live somewhere, either find a way to make more money or leave. That’s how the world works.

Her total assessed value is $75,000 on that house with a market value of $150,000. She does not live in Louisiana & her taxes are evaluated every single year just like everybody else's. She used to pay more, but every year the assessment keeps going down because her house continues to degrade. She has no money to fix the house because of how much she has to pay in taxes. I mean, it's kind of a scam that she has had to pay school taxes every year for the last 45 years despite her not having a child that went to school in that time period. How come she has had to pay more to support the younger generation with children for 40+ years?

My 95 year old grandmother pays $2000 in property taxes & another $3000 in school taxes every single year on a house that was built in 1850 that is falling apart. She was widowed in 1973 & as a single mother of 6 worked everyday of her life until she was in her mid 70s. She gets $10,000 a year from the federal government to live on, but once you subtract $5000 in taxes she is left with $5000 for the rest of the year to buy food, supplies & bills. Are people really this uneducated on this issue? Oh my god.

Abolishing private property in 2 easy steps Step 1 - Rent control: Rent is lower than costs and taxes so you can't do maintenance. Step 2 - Seizure: You don't have the money to do maintenance and the state uses it as an excuse to take your property.
