I just remembered a beautiful tale my dad told me about his mother's friend. The man returned home from the war and found a bunch of Ukrainians living in his family's apartment in Odessa. He asked what they were doing there and they said it was empty when they found it. He asked around about what happened to his family and learned that the building's caretaker told the Nazis a Jewish family lived in the house, which led to their murder. Some time later he met the caretaker. I guess she didn't find the right words because he concluded the meeting by emptying his magazine into her. He then went to the police and confessed to shooting the woman. The first response from the cops was, "first of all, don't get upset, can we get you anything? A cup of tea? something stronger maybe?" During the trial, the prosecutor spent so much time defending him, his lawyer barely had anything to add. Eventually he got two years in a prison that was basically a sanatorium.
