China’s one child policy didn’t just “reduce population.”
It turned the country into an upside down pyramid, and now the economy has to live inside that math.
For a while, it looked like a cheat code, fewer kids, more adults working, cheap labor powering factories and exports. That’s the China people remember.
That was temporary.
Now the bill is due:
• The workforce is shrinking, fewer young workers are replacing older ones. Manufacturing, construction, and services all get squeezed.
• Families save instead of spend. If you’re an only child, you’re the retirement plan for two parents and often four grandparents. That kills consumer demand.
• Housing demand weakens at the foundation. Fewer marriages and fewer births means fewer future homebuyers. That’s not a normal slowdown, it’s structural.
• The gender imbalance created long-term instability. A surplus of men means fewer families, fewer births, and more social tension.
You can stimulus your way through a recession.
You can’t stimulus your way through a missing generation.
You can repeal a law.
You can’t resurrect the births you erased.
The future collects.

I have a MAGA hat I wear to Jury duty in Los Angeles County - twice I’ve been called and twice I was dismissed in less than a few hours.
Last time I did it I even had a black gentlemen walk up to me and say “holy shit, why didn’t I think of that?!”
I offered him my hat when I was dismissed and he happily put it on hoping it would keep him off a long jury he also couldn’t afford to serve on.

The 2020 MAGA hat episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is an important cultural artifact because its central joke implies several major admissions by Larry David, who is a dedicated Democrat activist and donor. 1. That wearing a MAGA hat would lead to social shunning in progressive circles. 2. That being shunned in this way is actually desirable because progressives are so annoying. 3. That there is a transgressive thrill in donning this symbol, particularly in a liberal enclave. Comedy beats pundits and academics to the truth a lot of the time, because it is willing to point things out that would receive backlash in other settings, and Larry in the MAGA hat predicted the sharp rightward shift among white men that would occur over the next several years, and pretty succinctly explained why it was going to happen.

Ok I’ve gotten a lot of comments about my time working with Kirk Herbstreit on College GameDay today. I interacted with him at Arizona State years ago. He was delightful. But my best GameDay story is when I was working in Tempe and my job was to pick up John Saunders from Phoenix Sky Harbor airport. My rental car was a Honda of some sort. I have never been more embarrassed in my life. Thankfully, he was as pleasant as can be 🙌♥️
