Passing thought after lots of talk about molecular evolution: is it enough to document variation even up to function, without positing a plausible selection pressure? It’s hard, constrained by information and imagination, but likely a worthwhile endeavor.

Indian Society of Cell Biology
Ever wondered how injuries in tissues such as skeletal muscles are healed? Did you know that dormant stem cells in adults help repair and regenerate these damaged tissues? The Indian Society of Cell Biology, in association with Cactus, invites you to a free webinar on “Quiescent muscle cells are active communicators” led by Prof. Jyotsna Dhawan. Join us as we explore how signals from damaged cells activate the quiescent stem cells and discover how this communication effects the maintenance of tissues. Book your seat now: airmeet.com/e/49c74a60-781… 💸 Registration: FREE for all participants Topic: Quiescent muscle cells are active communicators Speaker: Dr Jyotsna Dhawan, CCMB Hyderabad Moderator: Dr Debdeep Dutta, IIT Kanpur Date: November 15, 2025 Time: 5:30 PM IST Language: English Duration: 1 hour What You Will Learn: ✅The importance of communication between cells to build and maintain skeletal tissues. ✅How complex signals are released in the form of tiny extracellular vesicles called exosomes. ✅How differentiated cells choose from the large number of exosomes released by dormant cells. ✅What our understanding of these quiescent muscle cells means for tissue maintenance. Dr. Jyotsna Dhawan | Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology Dr. Jyotsna Dhawan is an Emeritus Scientist at the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, where she has been a key researcher since 1996. Her work focuses on the cell biology of quiescence and skeletal muscle regeneration. She earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from Boston University School of Medicine and completed her postdoctoral research at Stanford University. With a distinguished career in molecular and cellular biology, she continues to contribute to advancing understanding of muscle stem cell biology. REGISTER TODAY! We look forward to welcoming you to this enriching session! @ccmb_csir @bhupro @Cactusglobal @NitinRammohan @majhi_ra @indian_hydra @saip_pydi @biopatrika @surithakur86 @abandopa @DebdeepDutta21 @ANRF @DBTIndia @bushraiitk @IndiaBioscience @IITKanpur @mfcem_iitk @BSBEIITK1 @ugc_india @CSJM_U

While reading for a piece I am writing for @shaastra on the evolution of Cetacea (whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc), I came across the work of A. Ranga Rao, a geologist at the Oil and Natural Gas Commission ( ONGC). I had heard of the work, but not of Ranga Rao. The discoveries of the fossils that led to an understanding of the origins of whales have interesting connections to Pakistan and India (and also Indira Gandhi)

I did my Post-Doc in India. The right lab and environment really helped! We hope to offer that to you, if you’re interested. Do get in touch for this application with a CV and questions you’d like to address.
The D2 Lab@TheD2lab

There are some really great projects in our lab that talented and driven people can take on, and make their own. Do get in touch if you have specific scientific questions in mind and the skills to address them in our lab. We’re happy to support well aligned applications. Hurry!

Happy and excited to share that our paper has been published and now available online! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jn… Our study demonstrates the presence of subtle phenotypes in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from young-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.
