Evolve Bank & Trust has begun informing Synapse end users of the balances the bank claims to hold for them and, for many, it's likely to be bad news: Evolve, through a third-party administrator, has begun sending out emails to impacted end users, enabling them to check what Evolve claims their Synapse "ecosystem" balance is vs. the amount of their funds Evolve says that it holds. While only anecdotal based on users I've spoken with and documentation they have shared, some are reporting approximately the correct amount, while many say Evolve is claiming to holds thousands of dollars less than the "ecosystem" balance that Evolve calculated and what users believe they are owed. Confusingly, Evolve is telling some users that it holds MORE than the Synapse "ecosystem" balance that it calculated for them -- most likely due to interest that has accrued since Evolve froze users' access to their funds on or around May 11th. Evolve Chairman Scot Lenoir released an open letter (linked in the comments below) addressed to "end users of Synapse brokerage," in which he deflected responsibility to its longtime partner and service provider Synapse, as well as the other banks involved. Evolve, Lenoir's letter states, "pursued the responsible course of action" and "felt it was our responsibility to reconstruct the balances and get an accurate understanding of true end user balances so that we could return the funds held at Evolve to the correct end users and in the correct amounts." Lenoir claims that Evolve was able to undertake this reconciliation by using Synapse data provided via the Chapter 11 trustee, Federal Reserve data that reflected the movement of money between the banks, and Evolve's own data. Yet, it's unclear it is even possible that the reconciliation process Lenoir describes could determine individual end user balances held at Evolve vs. other banks, as Synapse routinely moved money between its various bank partners for reasons unrelated to any individual user's activity or transactions. Lenoir's letter is likely to be cold comfort to users, like the one whose balance is shown below, who have already waited nearly six months and now are left wondering if they will ever get their money back.
