The government won't force you to vaccinate your kids, because we have certain principles about bodily autonomy and parental rights in this country. Even when the results are awful. We still have certain principles about personal choice. But with trans healthcare, there's a huge and growing movement to take away families' rights to make their own medical decisions about this kind of care. Even many liberal and centrist publications and commentators will constantly debate the quality of scientific evidence for youth gender medicine--at worst, the argument seems to be "we're not sure if it works, because there just isn't a lot of high-quality evidence." The implicit argument is that if the science is insufficiently compelling, the state would be justified to remove the liberty of families to make these choices for themselves. That state legislatures, or Congress, would be warranted in making these healthcare choices *for* American families--because the science is ambiguous. But where the science it *totally unambiguous*--on the benefits and safety of vaccination, or the necessity in many emergencies for blood transfusions, we let anti-vaxxers put their children (and other children!) at risk. We let Jehovah's Witnesses deprive their children of lifesaving emergency care. In other words, we are so committed, as a country, to the freedom of families and individuals to make their own choices about their bodies and their healthcare, that we allow them even to make *objectively very bad choices*. Except, apparently, when it comes to transgender healthcare. Here, we make an exception. Here, Congress gets to choose for you. In this one area, you are not to be permitted the freedom to make choices for yourself or your child. The government will tell you what you can and cannot do, as a parent. You're allowed to make medical decisions for your child that result *directly* in their death; but you're not allowed to get them healthcare that you and your child sincerely believe is necessary for their flourishing and health--not if that healthcare challenges people's norms about sex and gender.

@hecubian_devil Not outsourcing basic governmental functions, absolutely, but progressives usually love that kind of outsourcing (e.g., turning over most antihomelessness work to nonprofits). You usually bring in consultants, though, for special projects where the govt lacks expertise.

The obvious difference between Mamdani/DSA/socialists and the Right, in this area, is that we don’t think you can close the whole budget gap this way. We also want to raise revenue. But we have a generalized opposition to outsourcing and every efficiency helps. It counts.

I don’t think you can close New York City’s budget gaps by zeroing out McKinsey, feels similar to right wingers thinking the federal budget deficit is all due to waste, fraud, and abuse

@CrudeCO77 @RepDavid The one thing I will say is that non college educated immigrants actually *do* add a slight amount of debt. But they add more GDP than they do debt. That is just a fact. Thus, I’d argue a net positive, but that is the only place where there IS room for reasonable debate.

At what point do we stop calling this budgeting and start calling it national decline? We went from $38 trillion to $39 trillion in debt in 147 days. Debt moving that fast means interest takes a bigger cut and the debt markets get a bigger say. If we intend to save this country, we have to do the hard policy on health care, growth, and productivity before the bond markets do it for us.

@RepDavid you can fix this in 5 years by simply kicking all foreigners out and off the tax dime and ending handouts to NGOs and special interests

Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression. Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war.  Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace. I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe. I have been in contact with our Police Commissioner and emergency management officials. We are taking proactive steps, including increasing coordination across agencies and enhancing patrols of sensitive locations out of an abundance of caution. Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: you are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers, and community leaders. You will be safe here.

@hungryhungryhhh @dioscuri Exactly this. I think AI has the potential to make a lot of lives better. But only well regulated and in the right hands. Instead, it is in the hands of the ultra-rich who only care about sucking more money from the poor and middle class. So it will make a lot of lives worse.

As a generally pro-AI 41 year-old parent, I've been surprised how anti-AI my 12 year-old son is. I'm used to young people being pro- new technology (I certainly was). But my son is genuinely pretty negative on AI. Still processing why this is.
