On the occasion of Dick Cheney’s passing, it’s worth remembering the threat he made to Minnesota’s Senator Paul Wellstone in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq. Senator Wellstone was set on voting against invading Iraq because he was sceptical about the reasons being given to justify an invasion. He was very much the exception to the rule as most of the Senate had fallen into line in support of the Bush Administration’s War on Terror after 9/11. At a subsequent meeting with Cheney, Paul Wellstone later recounted what Cheney had said to him: ‘Cheney told him, "If you vote against the war in Iraq, the Bush administration will do whatever is necessary to get you. There will be severe ramifications for you and the state of Minnesota."’ On October 25th 2002, eleven days after casting his vote against war in Iraq, Paul Wellstone, his wife, his daughter, three campaign staff and two pilots died when their plane crashed in Minnesota. The Wellstone family told Dick Cheney that they didn’t want him to attend the memorial service for Senator Wellstone, his wife and daughter.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of former Vice President Dick Cheney. Vice President Cheney was a devoted public servant, from the halls of Congress to many positions of leadership in multiple presidential administrations. His passing marks the loss of a figure who, with a strong sense of dedication, gave so much of his life to the country he loved. Doug and I are keeping Lynne, their daughters Liz and Mary, and the entire Cheney family in our thoughts during this difficult time.
