I had a science teacher in HS. His first job out of college in the 1950s was cataloging all of the Anasazi ruins in what's now Lake Powell. He spent several years traversing the canyons, making maps, taking photos, etc. He was one of the few people to see all of Glen Canyon--and one of the last to see it before it was flooded.
Paul@WomanDefiner

Watching a video right now of a guy who is hiking the Canyon that used to be filled with the water of Lake Powell. I don't know what you do about it but this lake is well on its way to not existing soon.

At some point there was enough people pouring through here that somebody thought it necessary to bring out event fencing to corral them. Now left behind. UN Refugee Agency on the tent. My understanding is migrants sometimes camped out for weeks or months in the village before moving on, at times there were 1000+ milling about. In the third pic you can see a sign on a house asking people to not shit in his yard.

Here is a map (produced with the help of the UN Refugee Agency) prominently posted in the village showing services for the migrants. The vast majority of the indigenous villages in this territory do not have running water, electricity or sewage, but apparently at some point somebody set up showers for the migrants coming in from the jungle.

@QuetzalPhoenix Traditionally, the fine hearth ash deposited over the decades in Japanese hearths served as such a good insulator that the Shinto christening of a new house involves moving ash from the founding house's hearth into the new one's, like the way 🏛️ founded cities with passed flame.

@ChristianHeiens Theoretically it’s possible, but rarely happens. Many examples are actually counter-examples. The so-called “Civil Rights Movement” was astroturfed from top to bottom, and it took Gandhi several decades and two world wars to get Indian independence.

Revolutions are always instigated by a counter-elite seeking to displace an existing elite. Donoso Cortes explained this phenomenon far more eloquently than I ever could. Revolutions are not caused by poverty or oppression because poverty and oppression are the natural state of mankind. They’re driven by ambition and envy which is fueled by a small clique of counter-elites who promise that they can displace the class above them. This is why accelerationism doesn’t work. Making things worse doesn’t trigger people to rise up. Otherwise, North Korea would be in a state of perpetual revolution. You don’t spark a revolution by destroying people’s standard of living. The only way to trigger one is for a counter-elite to successfully appeal to one particular class of people that another class unjustly holds power over them. In our case, the class we would be appealing to is middle America, and the class we would be rallying them against is the professional managerial class. These people produce nothing, they provide nothing, they contribute nothing, and they have no loyalty to this country. Quite the opposite, they hate this country. They only see America as a vehicle to impose their ideology on the rest of the world. They do not deserve their status within our elite institutions. We don’t need them, and we would be better off if we swept them all out of power. Articulating that message would be far more likely to achieve victory than intentionally voting to make your own base’s lives worse by voting for Democrats.

@ChristianHeiens You are speaking as if revolutions have never happened. Power is universally wielded by whoever is most dedicated to violence. Right now, that's the state. It could be you. It could be us. Why isn't it?

A new day, a new foreigner speaking on American wildlife conservation who doesn’t understand our system and uses his lightweight commentary to do a sad resistance lib political performance. We famously love it when British people try and give us the business! >Is the American West fighting a “war on wolves” Americans invented and implemented one of the most unprecedented conservation programs in the history of the discipline in our wolf reintroduction to the Greater Yellowstone in the 90s that has produced the majority of the most impactful science on wolf restoration ecology and management today. Our Endangered Species Act is the strictest in the world and is a model for the majority of the rest of the world’s endangered species recovery law. Americans often pay high prices for these strict wildlife policies that include shutting down entire industries in entire towns. Wolf recovery isn’t as simple as you present it here. We were so good at it, that now, producer and outfitter livelihoods that have been here for centuries and shaped the history and culture of our lands are suffering. Greater Yellowstone wolf numbers are well above recovery targets set carefully by best available science and stakeholder input (the target was 300 and we are now closing in on 2000). We’ve delisted wolves from the Endangered Species Act and transferred management to the states who manage science based harvests on their numbers and produce some of the best available carnivore science on planet earth from their management programs. >Is the “GOP” fighting a war to keep bison in Yellowstone only? Likewise you’ve oversimplified the innovative conservation science and bipartisan stakeholder concerns over bison. Yellowstone’s herd, thanks to the science and management expertise concentrated in GYE universities and fish and wildlife/public land agencies, developed the Bison Conservation Transfer program. This program (with bipartisan buy in) sends hundreds of buffalo to public, private, and tribal land across states. These efforts are expanding herds nationwide. Again this work, including close work with tribes, is bipartisan. There are, likewise, bipartisan stakeholder concerns over disease transmission. Recent developments to prohibit bison on certain tracts of public BLM has nothing to do with the “GOP” and instead hinges on debate of whether an NGO run by billionaires from NYC and California (American Prairie) should be able to outbid Montana ranching families for grazing rights. But again, even though you don’t know any of that, don’t let that stop you from weighing in on the way we Americans manage and protect our wildlife!
Ben Goldsmith@BenGoldsmith

@RodeoProfessor Much of this is true. Also Leopold is among the greatest of American conservation heroes. But the West’s war on wolves? The GOP’s efforts to ensure bison never recover outside of Yellowstone?
