That means he has been entrenched in the swamp for 41 years. Thune is the swamp. And he has the resources to stay there. His campaign war chest is vast. His main campaign committee, Friends of John Thune, stands at about $18-20 million right now, and it's not even a reelection year for him. He also has zero debts reported for the campaign. But that doesn't even take into account the Senate Leadership Fund. That's the main Republican Senate super PAC aligned with him as Senate Leader. It has $238 million on hand at the end of June, and very little spending happening now. A primary challenger to Thune will have to have considerable grassroots support, and a ton of boots on the ground. He will be a formidable incumbent to replace.
