@dhh I'm also cheating a Little bit because I'm using a 64-core workstation so I probably get to use a bit more parallelism.

@LushEcho I have so many questions. Do you genuinely think I'm saying my CLI should know my identity?

@edzitron It does mean it isn't anywhere near as innovative as initially thought and the low training cost will only continue to be possible if other company's models continue to improve, for deepSeek to copy from.

I'm so sorry I can't stop laughing. OpenAI, the company built on stealing literally the entire internet, is crying because DeepSeek may have trained on the outputs from ChatGPT. They're crying their eyes out. What a bunch of hypocritical little babies. ft.com/content/a0dfed…

@bradtgmurray It was only 4 years?! It felt like pebble was around a lot longer, I suppose because you got so much done and it carried on having impact long after the acquisition! I remember being so disappointed when I didn't get my Pebble Time 2 and all those smart straps!

Today Google open sourced PebbleOS and it makes me incredibly happy. That codebase and that team I still have so much pride in. I remember typing `git init` during the Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and worked on it until we were acquired by Fitbit in 2016: github.com/google/pebble

Okay. Thanks for the nerd snipe guys. I spent the day learning exactly how DeepSeek trained at 1/30 the price, instead of working on my pitch deck. The tl;dr to everything, according to their papers:

@ThePrimeagen Yup! I want rock solid reliability, if I get that with a simple off the shelf approach that takes minutes to set up, why would I do anything else? Unfortunately that hasn't worked for my house, so it will be more sophisticated 😅 But I envy people who's network just works!!!

@dwlz @KevinHenrikson Yup, and you're filtering out people who rent a small apartment and don't have the freedom to build a bespoke network. Even for home owners, going beyond a mesh network requires more disruption and cost then they might be able to justify. Especially if their WiFi is great.

@KevinHenrikson Obviously most engineers know how their routers are set up. But damn, if you're over-optimizing on your home Internet setup, you're wasting your time and a poor resource allocator, and that's a terrible signal for 10x engineers.

Your technical interview process is wrong. After building multiple engineering teams at Microsoft, VMware & Instacart, I've discovered what really predicts performance. Here are the 3 traits of the best engineers:

@PeytonazHill @DuaneStorey @dhh How is what related to who? WPE, or WP Engine, filed an injunction against Automattic, who own Wordpress. It's sounding like this is going to lead to another TF/Tofu situation...

WPE has filed for a preliminary injunction against Automattic to have the hijacked ACF plugin listing returned and access to update their plugins restored. Immensely reasonable. I hope the court grants the request swiftly. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…

@mitchellh Because Windows with WSL is a far more accurate replica of a Linux environment than BSD/MacOS is? Microsoft's own terminal is massively superior to Apple's. Windows keyboard shortcuts make far more sense than MacOS. UIs are far more intuitive, with buttons *and* shortcuts!

I can understand engineers who use Linux. I can understand engineers who use macOS. I really don’t understand engineers who use Windows (except windows app developers). By understand I mean I can see the value system they operate under. It just seems bad for non-Windows dev work

@bitfield No. Sections of a function act as paragraphs, maybe they should be split into more functions, but maybe sometimes a blank line is fine.

Imagine a subset of TypeScript that doesn't include enums, namespaces, or parameter properties. I.e. removing everything widely considered 'legacy'. What would you call this subset? "Modern TypeScript"?

@dhh What do you mean by economics? Because I'm not aware of many programmers actually needing to work using the principles of economics.

@paulmetcalfe @fesshole Unlikely to be a direct debit it would be a CAT (continuous authorised transaction). Cancelling your card wouldn't even stop it. Your bank can put a block on it but you have technically given permission for them to use your card details for the service provided... very scummy

A beer subscription outright refused to accept I wanted to cancel so I told them I'm a recovering alcoholic and my wife will leave with the kids if I don't stop getting beer delivered to the door. Not heard from them since. I don't even have kids.

@DigbyStrong @GETucker1 @RoryStewartUK All of that is only really possible for the Government, you can't defeat popularist liars with more words, only action. The Tories needed this reset. Hopefully Labour are up for the task so that by the next election there are two parties capable of leading this country well.

@GETucker1 @RoryStewartUK They make the centre-right ground their stronghold, expose the Reform myths, and dump their neo-fascists into the far-right cesspit. But do they have anyone left, with an ounce of integrity, honesty and decency, to rebuild? Hmmm.

The change brought by this election is far more dramatic than realised. Only 3/30 members of Boris Johnson’s 2022 cabinet remain in Commons 2 years later - 90 per cent of his leadership are gone. This is a radically different commons. Let’s hope the new MPs improve things…. before they are co-opted by the leadership and whips
Sam Freedman@Samfr

Here's a remarkable stat: There are more people in the Commons who were in Gordon Brown's last cabinet (2010) than were in Boris Johnson's cabinet when he resigned (2022). Five vs three.
