A short thread related to a tough day. 1/ 13 years ago today, I had an unforgettable experience that has stuck with me to this day. I was sitting and praying quietly in church during service when someone came in the side door of and screamed, “John, please come outside now!“

There are certain people you cared for professionally who you never forget. And regrets, sometimes, for actions that could have been more skillfully taken. There are certain events that bring all that back. #ThirdDegreeBurns #ThoseWeCarry @ThoseWeCarry

Remembering one of the greatest influences, closest friends, and smartest minds I’ve ever known. 7 yrs since Jack left us. There isn’t a single shift that goes by where I don’t remember something he taught me. Missing the adventures. Cherishing the memories. @thosewecarry

As a small, blonde person I don’t really want to get typecast but I have spoken to a few people who have been having flashbacks etc recently and I don’t think we are really taught much about handling trauma and the received wisdom is absent when rotating often/less of a firm

Doesn’t your heart just drop when you come in and see new names on the board in certain rooms? Patients we’ve cared for for weeks… but you know they didn’t improve enough in 2-3 days to go to the floor or LTAC 😔 If you know, you know… #COVIDICU #thosewecarry

Gregg coming though with another story of #ThoseWeCarry. While not every first responder is diagnosed with PTSD, if you do it long enough, you end up with memories and some demons.

(1) Just recently had a loved one get into a serious car accident and end up in the neuro icu. Usually I’m calm and collected when it comes to seeing people in such critical condition but my stomach turned & my hands began to sweat seeing him for the first time. I’m so familiar-

When you're ready (not this week) look up @thosewecarry. We all carry a little graveyard in our hearts. It's both a privilege & a torment, but we needn't carry it alone. Deaths don't get less painful, but gradually become more familiar. Somehow, that helps.

What generosity. Thank you @smayman. Sending love tonight to everyone treating & caring for people who are dying. We can't always save a life, but your authentic caring matters so much more at that point. @EileenC_Foster it's ok to feel so sad: it's your compassion leaking.
