I haven’t a clue about any of this. I just wanted to see what secrets they might be hiding. Didn’t expect it to be about languages. I’m just sticking everything into ChatGPT as it’s way above my head. I’m taking from this, that the monks were trying to preserve how to chant the bible using an original language, along with pronunciations and lilts.

Long ago, Ireland was home to the giant Finn McCool (also spelled Fionn mac Cumhaill), a mighty warrior and leader of the Fianna. He lived on the Antrim coast with his wife, Oonagh (or Sadhbh in some versions). One day, Finn heard about a boastful Scottish giant named Benandonner (sometimes called Fingal in Scottish tales), who lived across the sea and was taunting or threatening Ireland. Enraged, Finn decided to confront him. He tore huge chunks of rock from the coastline and hurled them into the sea, creating a massive causeway (a bridge-like path of hexagonal stone columns) stretching all the way to Scotland so he could cross without getting his feet wet. When Finn reached the other side (near Scotland’s Isle of Staffa, which has similar rock formations), he peeked at his rival and realized Benandonner was enormously bigger than he was. Terrified, Finn fled back home across the causeway. His clever wife Oonagh quickly came up with a plan. She disguised Finn as a baby, dressing him in a giant bonnet and tucking him into a cradle. When Benandonner arrived (following the causeway and pounding on their door, demanding a fight), Oonagh welcomed him in and said her “husband” was out but their baby was there. Benandonner saw the massive “baby” and thought: If this is the size of their infant, how huge must the father be? He panicked, imagining a truly colossal opponent. To be safe, he fled back to Scotland, ripping up the causeway behind him so Finn couldn’t chase him. That’s why only the Irish side (Giant’s Causeway) remains largely intact today, with fragments on the Scottish side.
