it is crazy how stupid we are infinite examples of export controls being a stimulus for domestic production this isn't some hidden secret counterintuitive concept. they teach this to econ undergrads

Bruh if the Chinese are distilling American models right at a cheaper cost? Hear me out. Why aren’t the Americans distilling their own models to make it cheaper?

I’m an AI PhD at Oxford wanted to move to the US for years, but it never worked out. Maybe I can share why. To me, it feels like the US is making it harder and harder for Chinese talent to come or stay. First, Trump signed PP10043, which meant I couldn’t go to the US for any graduate school. That’s why I had to turn down my Stanford offer and come to Oxford. Later, I qualified for an EB-1A (the extraordinary ability green card). But because I was born in China, I’m stuck in a country-specific backlog that could take another 4–5 years. Meanwhile, on the other side, I’m getting 3–4 emails from China almost every week. They offer high salaries, free housing, generous research funding, and even offered an astonishing amount of money just for me to come back and have a conversation. I’ve always loved the American spirit. I truly believe my abilities could have a bigger impact there. But honestly, the whole process has been incredibly frustrating. All of this makes me wonder whether I should just give up. Why am I spending so much energy trying to go to a country that doesn’t seem to want me, when another country is doing everything it can to bring me back?

You are "head of strategic futures"!!! and you write exactly the narrative of OpenAI. What comments do you expect?
Dean W. Ball@deanwball

I’m afraid to tell you that it is effectively impossible to do the kind of writing I used to do on this website, not because anyone at OpenAI censors me but because of the sheer volume of hostility I get for sharing my analysis as a frontier lab employee. I enjoyed writing quick takes on this website for one basic reason: I could get rapid feedback on my own ideation process in real time. Post the early version of the take here, see the criticism; then refine, sharpen, and repeat. Unfortunately now that feature of this site is gone, because the feedback I get is now almost exclusively colored by resentment at the fact that I work at a frontier lab or other forms of hatred for my employer. The feedback signal is essentially useless now, so writing on here is not fruitful for me anymore. Literally everything I write now is responded to with “of course you said that because .” I am truly just writing what I think and would have written anyway, but everyone reads what I say in the shrieking tone of “this is what openai thinks!!!!” (to be clear, my posts are not what openai thinks). This is an unpleasant and more importantly unproductive pattern for me. I anticipate that the shape of this account will change significantly as a result. I do not currently know how. It will not become a LinkedIn feed. It will change in some other way. It will no longer be a real-time accounting of my own thinking as it develops, since this is precisely the thing that seems impossible to do now. That will have to shift to private channels.

They didn’t just narrow the gap. They OBLITERATED it judging from the latest @Kimi_Moonshot coding performance comps. Talk about firing a shot across the bow of US AI firms after accusations by Anthropic of Chinese tech $BABA use of distillation. I feel a big delay in these AI IPOs as investors begin to question their valuations in light of China’s challenge.

Does anyone know what happens to the US economy if China floods the world with cheap AI?
Datacurve@datacurve

Kimi K3 debuts at #3 on DeepSWE. It's the first open-weights model that delivers frontier-level performance, achieving results similar to Claude Fable and GPT-5.6 Sol.

@yuhasbeentaken Just use it if it can get the job done and the cost is affordable. The biggest benefit is users now have choices across the wide price spectrum.

i think chinese model teams are getting much better at building hype… i’m not even sure whether i mean that as praise or criticism. frontend coding is obviously one of the easiest ways to grab attention on x. rumor has it deepseek v4 is also insanely good at frontend. chinese social media is already full of one-click generated mini games.
Chubby♨️@kimmonismus

I stand by this: Kimi K3 will be a DeepSeek 2.0 moment in its own right. Perhaps not immediately visible on the stock market, but a global wake-up call that will trigger a "code red" for many.

As a Kimi annual subscription member, I tested the K3 for a day: K3 is another outstanding Chinese open-source model after GLM5.2. Frontend aesthetics are superior to GPT5.6. Backend code and mathematical capabilities are not as good as GPT5.6 and fable5.
青龍聖者@bdsqlsz

Deepswe's benchmark results are my own experience. I've used all models, GLM 5.2 ≈ Claude Opus 4.6–4.7. Kimi 2.7 code more like inference optimization. Looking forward to K3. Doubao-seed 2.1 Pro around 37% ≈ Gemini 3.5 Flash. code are quite weak, but visual are strong.

ok just spent a morning with Kimi K3 as my firstmate, here's my real experience 1. it's very, very slow potentially due to the fixed max reasoning. you should expect the experience of something slightly slower than fable 2. its claimed cost efficiency is not manifesting in real economics i bought the $40 plan, and a few prompts later it's already eaten 1/3 of my 5-hr limit - it was in a single session and my context window was only 200k long at that time i don't care what the benchmark numbers say, and what the face value API pricing is, in reality Kimi K3 burns my Kimi subscription as quickly as Fable burns my Anthropic plan - i observe no efficiency benefit 3. its instruction following capability is weaker than other frontier models firstmate stretches frontier models' reasoning capability and is a really good test that can quickly reveal how good a model is at following instructions the pure "intelligence" of K3 does hold up - it understands my intent very well, and can diagnose problems, delegate tasks all fine but i very quickly noticed many instructions in firstmate's system prompt not strictly followed by Kimi K3. these were never a problem with gpt 5.5, 5.6, opus, fable and grok 4.5 so all in all, i'm now very skeptical of the claimed performance and going to keep my eyes wide open on its true capability

It must be acutely embarrassing for Google and DeepMind’s top management that, despite having: 1) a multi-year head start, with most of the top minds in the field working there; 2) their own custom training and inference silicon now on its EIGHTH generation; 3) total investment in property, plant, and equipment of $281 billion; 4) over 80k engineers; 5) most of the world’s data collected and indexed for 20 years (including ungodly amounts of documents, emails, code, books, photos, videos, etc.); they have been utterly upstaged by Kimi, a company with fewer than 500 employees and founded by Zhilin Yang, who only received his PhD from CMU in 2019 (recall that Hinton had been working at Google since 2013!). Something is deeply dysfunctional and broken there to lead to an outcome this bad.
