What are the actual benefits of testing for respiratory viruses in the ED? Does testing change patient management? Does it reduce antibiotic use? Our systematic review and meta-analysis – just published in @JAMAInternalMed jamanetwork.com/journals/jamai… 🧵1/13

I can’t believe no one’s made a gif of this one yet. I’ll quote the great 20th century philosopher, Dirty Harry. “Excuses are a lot like assholes. Everybody has one.”

@DiorIzzy @BradSpellberg @DrToddLee Well They will always find an excuse You know the exclusion criteria Eg: atients with severe immunosuppression, foci requiring prolonged treatment, single cultures with possible contaminants, or cultures yielding Staphylococcus aureus #idxposts

Hey @DrToddLee, do you like this one? See highlighted mortality result. Compare to conclusion: "Rezafungin was well tolerated and efficacious..." Do people not peer review things anymore?

HPV vaccines offer a rare opportunity to effectively eliminate cervical cancer. By taking this opportunity, it’s possible to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of women each year.

Comprehensive study on unconditional cash transfers. TLDR: "Overall, the negative effects on labor supply do not appear to be offset by other productive activities" More in the well-written🧵👇
Eva Vivalt@evavivalt

We are happy to release the first results of a RCT of a US program that provided $1,000/month unconditionally for 3 years to 1,000 individuals in the treatment group, with a group of 2,000 people receiving $50/month serving as the control. These are sizable transfers. 1/ 🧵

More is not always better. Adding vancomycin to cefazolin as surgical prophylaxis in patients undergoing arthroplasty does not improve outcomes in patients not known to be MRSA colonized. Outcomes WORSE for knee arthroplasty. Just don't. nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NE… #IDWeek2024

🔥New antiviral (Ziresovir) in hospitalized infants with RSV Infection. nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… -0,8pts in the 12pt Wang bronchiolitis score at day 3. I am not impressed. In fact, most antivirals for acute infections suck. Let's rather invest in vaccines! 💉

1/ We are excited to share our report in #JEM that about 10% of severe tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases, triggered by the TBE virus (TBEV), are due to pre-existing auto-Abs neutralizing type I IFNs (doi.org/10.1084/jem.20…).

Passive immunity from mother to offspring is important for protecting against infections early in life but can also hamper immune responses to vaccines in newborns. This is why some vaccines are not given as early after birth as we'd like (ex measles). New interesting work from @katha_lahl lab & @TheYuanLab show that de novo immune responses are in fact delayed, but not blunted by maternal abs with B cell responses traced back to original infection by lineage tracing. Nice work! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@FReichert667 I think maternal vaccination + mRNA vaccine at 6 month would have been a great combination...
