I shoot with a 2008 Canon EOS Rebel XS, it gets the job done. Today, my friend allowed me to use their 2015 Canon EOS Rebel T6i. My goodness, it’s a night and day difference, genuinely life-changing, I didn’t realize how much I was missing out on.

@scr0sX What the foreground does is ground the image to a time and place. Everything else in the image should be there intentionally to draw the viewer through the frame to your subject or subjects, and keep the viewer within the frame.

#1 Recommendations for ANY storm photography: Subjects, subjects, subjects. You don’t ALWAYS need a subject, but subjects/proper comp can make any crappy storm look good. Good storms can look crappy without a subject.

@scr0sX Negative space around a subject, which includes the storm itself is important. It is also a fine line between good negative space and wasted space.

@scr0sX There are definitely things you can do with a field or with the road. It’s just using them intentionally to help draw a viewer where you want them to look. Another big thing is sometimes people have too much open space that does no good in the image.

At some point, someone else will die. Every year it gets more and more insane out here. Over the past 11 years I’ve seen it go from the seasoned chasers with their purpose built vehicles being too close (but with an excuse) to people in Honda 4-bangers waiting to find out why you don’t f around. Seriously, the young kid crowd shouldn’t have their lives cut short because they want to be “extreme.” If you’re reading this and think it applies to you, please consider that the energy at play in the atmosphere is way greater than what you or I can comprehend.

It is wild how times have changed in 30 years of chasing. When I started, getting yourself into a tornado was something you would be embarrassed about and the footage would never see the light of day. Not that that was a good thing, we missed opportunities to learn from others mistakes. Now there is a subset of chasers that routinely, and intentionally enter the debris cloud of strong to violent tornadoes, in regular vehicles, with no protection from missiles. And to be clear, I’m not taking shots at anyone, I’m just reflecting on how we reached this point and what is next.

I'm gonna go ahead and release this here, as there seems to be some discourse since it was not well documented, as @Tornado_Warned and I were the only chasers with a view of the Kankakee, IL Tornado as it morphed from a stout stovepipe to a large wedge. We were northbound on a road, looking south of the tornado, while most high-profile chasers were to the SW of the tornado at the time. This tornado turned into a rapidly widening tornado and was cloaked by RFD, moving directly into Aroma Park. This tornado spooked me to a degree as I was anticipating it to be moving more NE vs due East. Otherwise, this would have been a very close-range intercept. After this, the tornado became wrapped from our view before blasting east. I'll release a video of the Satellite with an evil El Reno-like Meso here later.
