@seanbamforth But there’s a poll I think showing half their members want Reform to win. Which perfectly captures their existential crisis.

Tories need to fight the Makerfield by-election hard. Stopping Reform from making gains is the only way they can survive as the "Right Wing party" in this country. They need to throw every activist in a 200 mile perimeter at the problem. They need to come first, or second after Labour.

Real change means tackling disadvantage head on. Replacing our deeply regressive council tax system is the kind of big, bold reform that would genuinely improve lives in northern towns like Hartlepool, putting more money back into the pockets of the people who need it most.

Without minimising the dire results for Labour, it’s extraordinary how chipper the Tories are. They’ve lost 500 seats from a low watermark, lost major councils to Lib Dems and Reform, show no signs of recovery in the esp LD areas they need to win.

Labour lost *every single seat* on Kirkless, where the party holds 4/5 MPs. We are seeing some of the most fragmented results in councils that combine a white working class vote with a large ethnic minority population - e.g. with Mill Towns like Kirkless/Burnley.

@LukeTryl @stephennaylor Looking at who has been elected, it’s hard to imagine that the new Reform group will be entirely cohesive!

Waiting for Calderdale to finish has defeated me and now 40 hours later I need to sleep so no more charts. England and Scotland wrap up threads tomorrow.

@LukeTryl @stephennaylor The Tory wipeout is interesting. Has perhaps been coming for a couple of years as they seemed to have lost most of their recent activists to Reform, but I expected them to cling on in a couple of wards.

@jessicaelgot True. In Calderdale where I was a councillor, the conservatives were the main opposition to Labour. They now have no seats, and as far as i can see, have lost most of their activists to Reform.

If this was Labour in opposition, there would be huge pressure on the leader to resign. It would inspire party-wide panic about a party effectively replacing them. But I can’t remember the last time I heard a Tory talk about the Lib Dems.

Why am I getting posts from people I don't follow on my 'Following/recent' feed? They're not being reposted by people I follow, most aren't ads. They're just posts randomly inserted into a feed that's supposed to be people I follow. Odd.

@NJ_Timothy So let me understand. The conservatives would ban Muslims from performing any act of worship in a public place. Would this also apply to Hindus? Jews?

Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

British schools are now closing for Eid. SPOILER: Eid is not a British holiday. Eid is not a British religious festival. Eid is not a British statutory holiday. We are being colonised. Afghanistan wouldn’t give the day off for Easter. Syria wouldn’t close schools for Passover. No other religion waltzes into another country and expects to be treated as if they are the majority. And no other religion is expected to roll over and take it… except Christians. Freedom to practice your religion ≠ Freedom to force it on others. The national religion of Britain is Christianity. Muslims do not get special treatment in Britain over other minority religions. And they certainly don’t get to colonise our culture with theirs. Britain is a Christian nation. You immigrate here, you integrate.

Every single time. Car domination makes city centres poorer not more prosperous. The data is very consistent. You don’t necessarily need to or should ban them, but you do need to put people first in all or nearly all streets.
Urban Cycling Institute 🚲 @fietsprofessor

When in 2007 the mayor of #Ljubljana proposed to close 12 hectares of its city center to private cars, just 40% of residents approved. A decade later, no less than 97% were against reopening to motor traffic: “None of us can really imagine cars ever staging a comeback”.

Introduced in 2018 and expanded to all roads by 2020, Bilbao was the first European city of 300,000+ to adopt a universal 30 km/h speed limit. Several years on, the results suggest it has delivered broad benefits on safety, public health, travel efficiency, and quality of life.🧵

Ms Truss sadly blocked me when I expressed scepticism about her economic record but I think it reasonable to call her a deluded conspiracy theorist who is essentially anti-British.

Didn't need to be in Cabinet to know how out of her depth Braverman was as Home Sec. As Dep Chairman of Home Affairs Select Comm I saw how dysfunctional she let the Home Office become week in week out. The graceless way she now blames colleagues who covered for her is shameful
