Fuentes’ four-seam grip … THREE fingers on the ball? What. 😂

Wally@WallyHuron
@LanceBroz random question, but do you know how common it is for guys to grip their 4S like this?

Standard dose of L-theanine is 100mg so maybe 2-3 teaspoons?
I used to take Alpha Brain before pitching and liked it, but most nootropics aren’t as popular as more traditional stimulants.
Never pitched on ADHD meds myself, but some guys swear they help focus while others feel they hurt feel/command.
English

Pre-pitching supplements that I find interesting, in addition to caffeine
-L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea leaves that smooths out the jittery edge of caffeine so you can stay calm and locked in. Some decent evidence here.
-Citocoline or Alpha-GPC are both choline supplements, a compound your brain uses to build and protect its cells, supporting sustained focus, especially under mental fatigue/stress. Found in eggs, fish, liver.
Alpha-GPC has a stronger, more acute effect, but it will ruin sleep in a decent % of people, ruling it out.
To be clear, I'm not making a recommendation here, but nootropics are something I don't see anyone talking about.
Visual processing, attention, focus (esp for people with ADHD tendencies) likely play a larger part in competitive performance than most appreciate.

"New age analytics" love Nico Hoerner. Old school analytics love Nico Hoerner.
You still need to layer OBP/SLG into value for hitters whose strength is batting average.

Added an umpire perspective layer to my ABS viewer.
Toggle it on and you see the ump's blind spots, regions of the zone where line-of-sight is partially occluded by the catcher's body or where viewing angle degrades depth perception. Distinct from the Statcast shadow zone (borderline pitch location). This is about umpire viewing geometry: where the slot position creates areas of lower perceptual confidence.
These are the regions where catcher framing mechanics have the highest impact on the call, and in the ABS era, where challenge strategy matters most.
Also built in a zone cell highlight showing which 1/9th of the ABS zone each pitch crosses through, a gained strikes model with ABS challenge adjustment, and a deception chart (not shown in video) decomposing glove drift into what the ump can see versus what's hidden along his line of sight.

A pitcher's 4S spin efficiency is one of the more underrated development metrics.
The #Mariners had 4 pitchers materially drop theirs this season (Gilbert, Hancock, Munoz, Catillo).
Is it malleable? And if so, why don't more teams change it?
Tease 👇, full vid in thread! 👀

@LanceBroz @FlexProGrip Breathing life into point the ball towards second base old school gospel.

I know 3+ MLB orgs that have a bunch of MOI balls, and it doesn't seem like anybody has actually proved it does anything?
And if they're lying to me, it doesn't show in the data.
@FlexProGrip is also in a ton of MLB clubhouses now. Maybe they have some promising results?
English

Do we know *why* McLean can spin the ball so much?
Finger strength? Grip strength? Something in his delivery? 🤔
I've been told spin capacity is largely immutable (controlling for velo). And I just don't believe that's true. Some team is trying to crack the code... 🧵

@LanceBroz @FlexProGrip Pretty high torqued grip. Separation between and ring and middle finger and anchoring on top of seam with middle is what stands out.

@DrivelineBB SSW dashboard for an active MLB pitcher who trains at Driveline. Here's a session of pitches with seam latitude analysis.
The tooling/models are still in alpha; will be in production come college summer.
@LanceBroz @PitcherList and @enosarris may appreciate this peek.

@Skipple_ @millertyme08 @RobertStock6 Yeah but that’s kind of the point, we are already halfway there. The jump to Ai generated visuals using the same live data isn’t that crazy. Just a higher fidelity version of what already exists.
English

@Timelville @millertyme08 @RobertStock6 This is literally just Hawk-Eye data and available for free, live on mlb.com for every game. It's called GameDay 3D. It has nothing to do with AI or generated video.
English

@RobertStock6 Ai rebroadcasting will be the future. Just need MLB Gameday feeding a model that recreates the game in real time, just generated video using player likeness and play-by-play data.
