"Dear Apple, please make the iPod again. Not everyone wants their kids to have full access to the internet and people."
The market for a clean, music-only device aimed at parents is real and growing.
The data is on the parents' side. Studies from the AAP and Common Sense Media consistently show device-free or limited-device kids report better sleep, better attention, better mood.
Schools across the US and UK are now banning phones outright in classrooms, with documented improvements in test scores within a single semester.
But Apple won't make the iPod again.
The reason is the iPhone economics. Apple makes roughly $200 billion a year on iPhones plus services, and their entire ecosystem strategy depends on getting users into iMessage, iCloud, App Store, and Apple Music as early as possible.
A clean, locked-down device that doesn't pull users into the platform is the opposite of the lifetime-value math their stock price relies on.
The third-party market filled the gap.
Yondr pouches, Light Phone, Gabb Wireless, Pinwheel, Bark Phone, and a half-dozen others now sell parents simplified phones with no internet, no social media, no app store, and just calling, texting, and sometimes music.
The Light Phone III ships this year at $599. Gabb's plans run $20 a month with a kid-safe device.
Apple won't compete in this space. The TAM is too small, the margins too thin, the brand cannibalization too risky.
The iPod isn't coming back.
The market that misses it is real, and others are quietly making money serving it.

Developers running local AI agents just killed the $599 Mac Mini.
Apple axed the 256GB base model entirely and the entry price is now $799. Tim Cook says it'll take months to catch up with demand because the M4 Mac Mini became the machine everyone grabs for running local AI workloads. Meanwhile Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron are pumping nearly all their DRAM into AI data centres and consumer memory prices jumped 90% in Q1 alone.
Even Apple can't keep the Mini in stock with their supply chain muscle, think about it.
