Let’s not forget that the revised Mental Health Act should make it harder for autistic people to be detained under s3. Frith’s words will just make it easier for some psychiatrists to justify removing a person’s autism diagnosis. Vested interests are crawling out of the woodwork.

It’s rather interesting that Frith’s dated views are being hawked about at a time when cuts to benefits and the dilution of SEND are being proposed and at a time when @wesstreeting wants to know if Autism is being over diagnosed. Spot the hidden agenda anyone?

The continued use of restrictive practices as disciplinary sanctions on SEND children is unacceptable. The burden of communicating an unmet need, distress, or a system failing to listen is placed on the child. We must move from control to care. #HarrysLaw

co concurring physical conditions eg hyper mobility syndrome or EDS that often walk hand in hand with Autism/ADHD indicates that Autism etc is not a stand alone condition that some researchers can dismiss because they have researched in a silo of their own making. See Firth.

An important question often asked by @NotFineinSchool families has been raised today: “Hi all, is it normal for school and the LA to push home education? Can we be forced to home educate even if that’s not what we want?” ‘Can’t meet need.’ ‘This isn’t the right school for your child.’ ‘Deregister to apply for an EHC needs assessment.’ Families pushed into non elective home education at an unprecedented scale currently. Many do and find respite and relief. But many don’t. Off-rolling is often silent with families consequently facing home visits from safeguarding, education welfare teams families end up laughing out of the door in understandable frustration. The lens of scrutiny is only going to escalate for families whose children are not in school. We must think and do very very carefully. These children have often lost all trust in adults from statutory services and their families have too. The moral injury and impact ripples across lifetimes.
