@ColinParent Izakaya Masa is my favorite. They don’t even have a sign in English, though somehow they’ve been discovered by the non-Japanese crowd. Only peeve: no refills on their hot tea.

Visited a few izakayas in Vancouver. They were excellent. Where are your favorites in San Diego?

@YIMBYLAND None of you want to live in The Portola (that's Silver Ave looking south - top of the hill, possibly Yale St, but you wouldn't know that), so your point is totally mute - high density BMR condos you all want built will not be built in that drab neighborhood.

The same people saying the Marina project looks horrible will look at you in the eyes and with a straight face tell you this is a historic neighborhood that must be protected.

@humantransit When a freeway is shut down, it’s “Carmageddon”, but when transit is disrupted, leaders don’t care. Here in San Diego, our whole train line is often closed all weekend for “track maintenance” with no alternative service offered. So frustrating!

Who the fuck at Apple approved this? My entire music library for DJing is in my documents folder and guess what, disabling this *deleted* every files in my local documents folder instead of just disabling syncing for it, absolutely unacceptable imo

@burgwx Let’s also consider that 1974 was a long time ago relative to societal changes. It feels fair to try it again

Just a few apolitical things to consider here: 1. We already tried this back in 1974, when permanent DST had 79% public support per polling - but rapidly became unpopular after very late winter sunrises, and was cancelled within 2 years
Breaking911@Breaking911

BREAKING: The House has passed legislation to make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide, ending the twice-a-year clock changes by a 308-117 vote. Backed by President Trump, the bill now heads to the Senate. If approved and signed into law, Americans would no longer have to change their clocks.

@ColinParent I agree. You don’t want chaos, but I love the street food scene in Asia and actually liked when there were food vendors next to the boardwalk along the beach, unlike almost all the incessant complainers on NextDoor.

What's the solution? There should be limits and regulation, but fewer than before. And fewer than are the preferences of local businesses and park institutions. Regular people like a little chaos and happenstance, and their preferences matter too.

@DavidGr30214992 Fair point. Central HVAC clearly modern homes much better. I’m just curious how much multi-splits change the equation today, since they don’t require the same ductwork.

I think Americans misunderstand why AC is less common in Europe. For a lot of Europeans, comfort is not always about controlling everything artificially. It is also about opening the windows, letting air circulate, using shutters, living with the seasons, and keeping life simple. It is not necessarily backward. It is just a different relationship with comfort, energy, and everyday life.

I've eaten at In n out regularly since 2004... when my small town got an In n Out and not once have I ever been asked if I wanted Animals Style anything... it's a secret menu that the cashiers don't ask on their script... you must ask for their secret menu. I was so amused by this guy until now when I suspect he's just making stuff up for toots and giggles...😶

I went to In-N-Out and ordered a cheeseburger. The cashier, a calm young woman named Destiny, asked me a question I did not expect. "You want that Animal Style?" I paused. I did not know what this meant. But a samurai does not admit he does not know. So I answered with weight. "...Animal Style." "Cool. So that's mustard-grilled, extra spread, grilled onions, pickles. Yeah?" I understood now. This was a sacred permission. For one meal, I was being told to put down my manners at the door. To eat the way a beast eats, without shame. I had waited my whole life for someone to give me this order. "Yes," I said. "I will become the animal." Destiny did not blink. "...Okay. You want your fries Animal Style too?" I stopped. Even the potatoes? "The potatoes also become animals?" "I mean, they get cheese and sauce and grilled onions, so..." "Then yes. Let the potatoes abandon their restraint as well." "...Got it." She was the calmest woman I have ever met. "3x3, 4x4, or just the one?" I did not know these numbers, but I knew a challenge when I heard one. "How many must I face?" "It's, like, how many patties you want." "How many is the most honorable?" "...Four is a lot." "Then four. A warrior does not ask for fewer." She wrote it down without argument. A 4x4, Animal Style, with animal fries. She warned me once, kindly. "That's gonna be huge." I told her I was counting on it. It arrived. It was a tower. Cheese and sauce ran down my hands the moment I lifted it. There was no clean way to eat it. There was no dignified way. That was the entire point. I ate it like a beast. Both hands, no honor, grilled onion on my chin, and I have to be honest with you, it was the best thing I have ever put in my mouth. For thirty years I have kept my manners at every table in the world. They handed me a burger and told me to be an animal, and I have never felt so free. So tell me, America. The whole country knows the secret menu. What else are you hiding in plain sight? And "Animal Style." Was I eating the animal, or finally becoming one?

@humantransit Hate when there’s no front plate, especially when I’m looking for my rideshare car. It also means all automated parking lots need to have a camera way in the back, which complicates construction.

Crazy story: 1964: my grandma bought a painting for $100 1979: she sold the painting for $55k 1989: the painting resold for $ 7mm+ Today: it’s featured in The Smithsonian What an incredible journey for a painting…so the real question is…how do we get it back ha Thanks to my uncle @TokyoJim for digging this all up.

@Kanjo For transit use, my friends don’t like to use NFC because it requires loading money ahead of time, while with QR it just charges you per ride. In shops, many have installed an Alipay NFC device:
