Who knew? Declaring something “a human right” magically abolishes all costs. The reservoirs, the pumps, the pipes, the filtration - all become free. Why did no one tell us?

@neildrewitt @spectator What do you mean? Schools still have uniform codes today. In fact, I'd say school is one of the few environments that hasn't been impacted by the trend towards more casual dress.

When I started secondary school in 1994, we were supplied with a copy of the rules for our uniform, haircuts and footwear. These ran to more than a page of closely typed A4 – and they were strictly enforced, too. 'Tuck that shirt in, boy!' was a regular refrain in the corridors.
At the time, we regarded these regulations as a source of annoyance and ridicule. I dare say even some of the parents might have thought them rather excessive. Nowadays they might run afoul of equalities law. But looking back, it is not difficult to see their merit.

I think it’s wrong to keep describing Louise Haigh MP as a convicted fraudster. She committed a crime 13 years ago. The crime she committed, for which she received one of the lowest possible sentences - a conditional discharge, does not preclude her from doing the job she has been appointed to. She made a mistake and she should be allowed to move on from it. Perhaps I was being a little facetious when I said "not actually a Christian" but I think extraordinarily weak formation is still absolutely grounds to reject someone for ordination training. Obviously most blame goes to the DDO and selection panel, but I don't think the theological colleges can be let off the hook. It's not like they're forced to admit someone.

@gerrylynch @2D0XPS It is somewhat damning of the theological college's admissions process if people who don't believe/understand basic Christian doctrine have been admitted for study. Although it's even more damning of the selection panels.

@2D0XPS Completely beyond me how it's Cuddesdon's fault if Dioceses and the selection system are sending them ordinands with such limited Christian formation. But I note lots of people here tripping over themselves to sharpen their church party battle-axes anyway.
