Nolan on why he gutted the real ending of The Odyssey: "The end of the poem is so grim and so misogynistic, I had to exclude some of that material." He didn't adapt Homer. He edited him for wrongthink. 3,000 years of literature, rewritten because a millionaire director decided the original was problematic. Note he waited until the film had been out a week to release this information. Hollywood is intentionally destroying our culture. Do you get it now?

@johnsemley3000 Unfortunately, Nolan isn’t and has never been a great artist. He’s mediocre at best.

@johnsemley3000 It may not have been the most popular choice, but it would have been a better artistic choice (it also would’ve necessitated the film be entirely different though). I think a more interesting artist would have put forward the alien morality and psychology of the ancients.

Christopher Nolan still a mid director at his best and a terrible one at his worst. Odyssey sucks. Odysseus’ journey to self-cancelation… Also, there may not be a director less able to make use of 70mm and IMAX than Nolan who almost exclusively creates dull images.

I checked like 50 rankings of Nolan's movies, and this almost always ranks 2-5. Oscar noms for writing and original screenplay. Called "brain melting." You're tough to impress!😂

@Carter_Shade Yes, I think it would be fascinating to be confronted by the ancient and alien morality of the classical world. It's part of why people still find The Odyssey (the epic poem) interesting.

I liked, but didn't love the movie, but I think I'd ask:
Is a movie about how Odysseus wanted glory and got glory and was satisfied a particularly interesting one?

Emily Wilson after watching the Odyssey: ‘The film presents an Odysseus who feels very bad about things that he's done in war, and is struggling to process them in a very modern, psychiatrised way – and needs drugs to do so! He seems to feel bad about being a warrior, and we never actually see him get to do much warrioring ... Nolan makes the protagonist a likeable, all-American hero; Homer's Odysseus wants glory, and he wants to get spoils from the sack of a city! I kept looking in vain for a sense that this was a film about glory. This is a film that has an interest in shame, but I don't think it has any interest in glory.’

any adaptation of The Odyssey that truly emulated Ancient Greek moral structures without reservation would be utterly unsympathetic and perturbing to modern audiences. the fact that people freaked out about the puppies being thrown off the cliff proves this.

@Wanizame It’s not his craftsmanship that I question, but his artistry. His lack of interesting varied compositions and use of color and the hollowness of his ideas.

@Tommy_Prieto That’s not what you said though you called him “mid” and “terrible” not “he’s not as good as this other dozen directors” it’s your framing, it’s inherently negative and ignores the craftsmanship in favour of preference. A preference is valid but your commentary on ability isn’t

I think part of what is interesting anout dreams is their mystery - unfortunately Nolan rationalizes all this mystery out in Inception.

@Tommy_Prieto @richmk45 @AEfterlife117 Definately you're the first person I've ever heard say Inception lacked creativity. The idea is 100% original. Can you think of anything it draws on or pulls from? Other movies that go third-layer subconscious? Is he still in a dream???

@AEfterlife117 @richmk45 @bfredbaker No, it’s not that he has a big budget that’s problem. What I mean to say is his earlier cheaper films are quite different - less spectacle driven - and I find them to be more charming.

@scotmh101 I don’t care about the ethnicity of the cast. I have had issues with Nolan’s filmmaking style and ideas dating back to Inception.

@Tommy_Prieto OK - I’ll entertain an exchange with you on this subject, but first tell me if you genuinely think Nolan is a mid to terrible director or if you are just butt hurt around the ethnicity of the cast.

It’s not his technical capacity with IMAX and 70mm, but rather his artistic ability with it - composition, color, etc. - that I think is lacking. Also, his style - full of medium close ups of people giving exposition - doesn’t suit the medium as well as a style that leans more on long shots and thoughtful compositions (like David Lean).

@Tommy_Prieto The art or the artist’s ‘ability’? You can critique the product - like any punter. But to claim the artist lacks ability, based on their use of technology ignores the fact that it’s likely an active choice - a style. You don’t like his style. That’s ok. That’s how art works.

Huh? Obviously, I don’t like the movie. I thought I was pretty straight forward about that. I gave a couple reasons why I don’t like it: (1) the lack of great/memorable images (they’re all quite drab) and (2) Nolan’s take on The Odyssey, which is that it’s about a guilt and PTSD ridden patriarch who must atone by canceling/exiling himself. I think this is kind of boring and conformist take on the material.

@richmk45 @bfredbaker @AEfterlife117 No, there are other people that are largely negative on Nolan’s big budget films. I have friends that are largely down on his big budget films. It’s a minority position to be sure - he’s a very successful filmmaker - but it is not a unique one.

I kind of like Tenet because it’s a movie almost entirely of people sitting in rooms giving exposition that explains what the hell is going on, but Nolan’s sound mix completely drowns out everything they’re saying so the movie plays out like a bizarre experimental film in which things happen for no apparent reason.

We can have a conversation about Nolan being overrated fs. I think Tenet is a bad movie, Interstellar is overrated. But when Nolan hones in on one concept and decides to make it a cinematic experience like Dunkirk, Oppenheimer, he is incredible.

@paulmakesmovies I must say he did not make me feel much with The Odyssey. Even in many of the films in which he does evoke some reaction - mostly spectacle - he does it in a cheap way - through loud blaring noises or hyper-editing that obscures the hollowness of the his ideas.

@Tommy_Prieto He’s an ontologically minded director. Above story and pacing and blocking he wants you to feel something. And he manages to do that extremely well in all of his pieces.
And yes - it’s not for everyone.

I think a great Odyssey film would either (a) sticking closer to the ancient (almost alien) morality of the original work, which would have produced in the audience a productive distance from the work or (b) if looking at it from a modern perspective, then Odysseus is a hero who represents the discovery of reason in history. Instead Nolan chose a conventional PTSD and guilt-laden take in which Odysseus must self-cancel for creating the initial atom bomb and being a toxic patriarch.

@Tommy_Prieto I don’t like all his films. I do think they can be sterile and characters often flat but good call him mid or terrible is just evidence of your own inability to understand the medium.
