Since the #Ohrid #Agreement became a benchmark for 🇷🇸’s 🇪🇺 path, Belgrade’s leadership has shown little intent to implement it. Instead, including in the years prior, it has moved in the opposite direction: advancing revisionist policies and supporting, encouraging, and shielding those responsible for the #Banjska violence. At the same time, sustained pressure on Kosovo Serbs to withdraw from 🇽🇰 institutions has reversed much of the integration progress achieved since 2011, leaving the community in a markedly worse position than five years ago. With democratic standards and the rule of law deteriorating in 🇷🇸, a shift in course appears unlikely in the near term. The 🇪🇺 should therefore intensify direct engagement with 🇽🇰’s institutions and the Serb community in 🇽🇰. Recent steps suggest that, while some coordination with Belgrade remains necessary, this approach can deliver tangible results. Advancing 🇽🇰’s membership in the Council of Europe and opening a credible #EU accession path, as part of a broader adjustment of the 🇪🇺’s offer to its (potential) candidates, would strengthen stability, support reform, and deliver concrete benefits for 🇽🇰 and its resilient and important Serb community. Montenegro is making good progress on its path to EU accession. Today another negotiations chapter was closed. I met with Prime Minister @MickeySpajic to discuss the ambitious timeline for completing negotiations. Sustained reform efforts and cross-party and inter-institutional consensus are needed to deliver on these ambitions. We also discussed the preparation for EU-Western Balkan Summit. Already looking forward to meeting European and Western Balkan leaders in Tivat.
