Jewish immigrant Max Fleischer famously ripped off the likeness, baby-voiced jazz singing, and “boop-oop-a-doop” catch phrase of Helen Kane, who was White.
When Kane rightfully sued for royalties, Fleischer drug Esther Jones, a Black jazz singer, into court and said Betty Boop was a composite of multiple people.
Despite animators saying Boop ripped-off Kane’s likeness and style, Fleischer’s scheme worked.
This is the origin of “the real Betty Boop was a Black woman claim.” It was Fleischer’s scheme to evade paying anyone royalties.
