Planting depth matters. Noticed a planter dropping seed at 1.25", moved it to 2". These plants were 12 rows apart. Higher plant stands, more even emergence, better roots. Adjustments cost $0 and can provide great #ROI. Make time to dig behind the planter. Well sown is half grown

First report of southern corn rust for 2025 comes from Jackson Co, FL. Thanks Caleb Traugh! While none yet known in GA, corn growers in extreme SW GA with corn at tassel or beyond should take threat seriously. Weather now very favorable for infection and spread. UGA Extension

@gavin_spoor I want to retain at least 4 pods on every fruiting node. Having 5-7 is a good sign, now we just need to maintain seed size

How many pods do you like to see per node? Finding lots of plants with 5-7 pods/node. Is that below/above normal? Have some later maturity beans still throwing flowers. Beans are neat

@ISchmidtFaced That picture of the individual beans was at desiccation. They were dry at harvest

Left to right planted at 40, 80, 100, 200k. What surprises me is the big jump in branching from 100 to 80. #lowpopmafia

A good example of what we are looking for with soybeans. 20% of the pods have 4 beans, and there just may be a 5 in there. Average 4 pods per mainstem node. Planted at 110k, final stand around 95k. Grower did a great job.

@Traugh_Ag I just worry about not getting enough product on to make a difference in the tissue test.

Let’s talk wind squatted soybeans. Had perfect tracks in them for the sprayer prior to the rain. How much loss will there be if I run in them again for fungicide and foliar fertilizer applications. I’d say at least one trip in them if not 2. Possibly a desiccation pass at the end

@Traugh_Ag Some of those are Curvularia leaf spot. The more concentrated small pinpoint lesions along the midrib are a “new” disease of corn that has yet to be completely described.

It has been a few years since I’ve run across really long Diplodia leaf streak lesions. I’ve seen 18” lesions before, but didn’t take the time to measure these today. Look for pycnidia within lesions to aid diagnosis #mscrops

What the drought didn’t take. Corn ear worms did. Vt2 doesn’t work here.

First detection of tar spot on corn in Georgia today, 5 July. Found in a significant area of field (corn at R5) where earlier aerial fungicide application was not possible because of tree line. Tift County near Omega . UGA Extension

I suspect the corn is magnesium deficient. I will apply magnesium sulfate or nitrate with fertigation. An estimate of how much loss I will experience in corn yield. (due to late intervention)

Some more sampling. Such an important step for me. I feel this is where a lot of math can go the other direction if its done sub-par standard.

@jasonmauck1 Some growers I work with put directed spray nozzles on their y drop bars and run both herbicide and fertility at the same time. Works great for controlling escapes or overlapping residuals but I still want the main herbicide pass done before the corn is big enough to y drop.

Why do we force our crops to metabolize the herbicides we spray over the top of them? With all the tech why don’t we spray while we sidedress from low, below the corn canopy? Or wheat Or ? That same tech could also Plant (or place fert in soil) ,band (hood spray) , sidedress all in 1 pass 1 machine does corn detailing … and is a relay crop dream machine. Combining 3 passes into 1 in 30’, 40’ to mirror harvesting equipment… ctf
